- i attempted this post about an hour ago - here it is again:

oakland girl here. there has been a tremendous amount of community outreach leading up to the verdict. community centers are open encouraging people to gather after the verdict and talk about how they feel - peacefully. i work in downtown oakland and it CLEARED OUT after the verdict. people are gathered downtown now - and thank goodness it's all peaceful - remarkably so. i hope it stays that way when the sun sets. i'll hear news helicopters circling all night i'm sure....waiting for some random act of violence that the news can sensationalize. personally? i think it was voluntary manslaughter. one doesn't un-holster, un-lock and shoot ones gun "involuntarily".

oakland police chief anthony batts is having a press conference now. i'm so proud of oakland right now. i hope i go to sleep feeling the same way.

i had to do a double-take at the "trillion" figure as well. but i suppose to a starving child a trillion and a million are equally abstract (and equally depressing to see frittered away).

i like magnolia flower petals. after they fall and wilt a bit they feel like little chamois. magnolias are lovely and i now have a greater appreciation of their leaves.....

apparently said women do exist. granted, i live in solidly blue territory, but every woman i know (other than my mom in TX. sorry mom - i'll fetch you from under the bus in a moment) is insulted by Palin. her candidacy has dedicated them to defeat of mccain/palin. i just have a problem with people talking about one group without acknowledging the other - because i think they may be of roughly equivalent size and influence. what do y'all think?

oh believe me, i know of what you speak! since the palin announcement and the subsequent assault on my sensibilities i am incensed as never before. maybe this phenomena is not as vast (and certainly not as well publicized!) as palinphilia, but it is intense. i will fight with far greater vigor over the next 2 months - with time, money, whatever it takes. i truly hope many others feel the same.

i'm with runasim. i think we need to make and effort to separate the true "nasty" from the truth-that-not-be-named. obvious examples 1) the assertion by Black that McCain would benefit from a terrorist act and 2) Clark's assertion that being an AF pilot shot-down does not qualify one to be president. Both are clearly true. i'm curious about why these fall into the "nasty" category. phraseology? does fighting ALL these battles increase the likelihood that weariness will will set in and responses to the the real nastiness will fall deaf ears?

i agree that this post is insightful. but i, too, am perplexed that 6 straight posts on TMV are about this topic. i'm trying to figure out how "we" strike a balance wrt election subject-matter. MSM won't help. how can we?

i'm not denying that this is a dialog our country needs to have but i'm concerned that this is "obama's baggage". to give this issue legitimacy we need to discuss it outside of these "obama-pastor" moments. we do these concerns a disservice by tying them to this triviality.

i know ALL posts on TMV are not "moderate," but i expect them to be moderately insightful. there are plenty of blogs specializing in simple-minded rants. it's a shame to see one here.
