Your comparison to Apple isn't valid. Apple gets revenue from hardware and software. Microsoft just from the software. For a more equal comparison, you might look at what Microsoft charges hardware manufacturers to ship with the OS, and that is much less than $30. Really, it isn't possible to get a fair comparison between the two

Seeing as they are essentially a rebrand of acer, if you like acer quality, I think you'll be happy with Gateway.

I've got a four year old t-series that is running strong. Fan is way too loud and always runs, but aside from that, it has lasted longer than my Toshiba, Sony or Dell

A flight attendant recently commented to me that the 'turn off electronic devices during takeoff and landing' exists because those are the times during a flight where their is most likely to be an incident, and they want to be able to communicate with passengers quickly in an emergency without the the passengers being distracted.
It has little if anything to do with interference. If interference was an issue, I'd think electronic devices would need to be switched off at all times.

My understanding of the 'January update' was that it was a 'january announcement', it was a january update on what was happening with the platform, not a january update to the platform. Bad PR from microsoft.

I'm on my second windows 7 device after having to give back my LG, and I was considering going to Android, but after playing with it, I just can't imagine dealing with an OS that isn't as pretty as WP7.

Also, with neilsen reporting 10% market share for WP7 as a percentage of sales over the holiday season, http://blog.nielsen.com/nie..., I think we can say that they've made significant gains in the marketshare.

In Canada we don't have much WP7 marketing going on, and I haven't really seen much in the US either, so this kind of adoption with somewhat limited marketing I find quite impressive.

Ironic that Google couldn't get app search right on their own OS. Chomp must have been seriously full of themselves to initially think that they'd be able to build a better search algo than google on googles own platform.

Amazingly, the bold move seems to have paid off so far, and I think it will continue to do so.

Compete is showing a downward trend in traffic. http://siteanalytics.compet.... I checked quantcast, but the stats are blocked for TC. Alexa shows growth through 2010, but a significant drop in 2011.

What is the split of mobile, tablet, pc. You mention Android, so clearly mobile devices are included in your stats. With Android now hugely popular for mobile, android tablets just getting started, WP7 recently launched. All these things need to be kept in consideration of measuring the stats.

Apple doesn't care where the content comes from, is hosted, etc. They aren't selling the content through itunes, just providing billing through an itunes store api.

It is a tax to have content on an apple device.

Why should apple build a service which can compete with netflix/kindle/etc. etc. when they can implement a tax which is >= the profit margins these companies make.

I know apple has ibooks, and movie rentals through itunes, etc. etc. but the quality of their offerings falls far short of their competitors.

This isn't innovation, it's riding others coattails and possibly killing the golden goose if enough publishers decide that apple isn't the way to go.

shouldn't really be a big deal for either of these. Just don't remove the 'dongle' from the end of your charge cable or headphones. Ok, probably not ideal, but how many people are using a single headphone on multiple devices?

I completely agree with much of what you say Enrique, the value of the services is greater than what you are charging. However, the reason you are working with these groups is because you believe that your investment will result in a significant return. You are trying to do everything you can to help these companies be significant and the longest possible runway likely factors into that.

If you believe that the return on the 25-100k investment is going to be 1.5m+, why start by asking for between 6-25% of your investment back while the company is completely focused on getting up to speed.

I guess in the back of my head I've got Ron Conway's comments re: valuations. Paraphrasing - If you're investing 100k and looking at a 100x return, does it matter if you end up putting in 110k at the same valuation? I can't find the interview where I saw him speak in those terms, I believe Paul Graham has made similar comments.

Either way, it isn't my business, particularly the way TC worded it sounded strange, but they have since updated the article and Dave cleared that up.

I assume the bulk of the value in Palm was in their IP, not in the OS.
The OS was a bonus.

But I've got apple fanboi friends who have given up their iPhones for Palm Pres and swear that the Palm WebOS is better. I don't see the huge attraction to WebOS, but I haven't used it for more than a few minutes.
Maybe there is a future in the platform. I do believe the html/javascript based OS is a brilliant move and could be an advantage in the long run.

What's the logic in charging back $1000/month/founder for deskspace? Seems a bit like nickel and diming the companies that you're supposed to be giving the greatest chance for success.

Spoondate & Wednesdays both seem to be focusing on such niche markets, I question if the founders are thinking big enough. And specifically aimed at Wednesday, what happens when somebody comes up with 'Thursdays'??? 'Unless of course, somebody comes up with 6-minute abs. Then you're in trouble huh?'

Aren't these ads subsidized by the manufacturers?
Plus, there isn't anything new in Android/WP7/Palm right now.

When a cool new Android3 (Android <3 ?), WP7, etc. etc. device comes out and one of those companies decides to spend what Apple spends on marketing, I fully expect to see new non-iPhone ads
