One Student in particular had plans to become a pilot. However she was doing her last year in school and she was majoring in principles of business and typing. She had no idea where training for pilots was done, no idea what the entry requirments were and she had no clue what the salary was of a pilot was like.
these students are just setting themselves up for failiure as the fanciful dreams are unrealistic. Their parents cannot afford their dreams and the society has no space for their intent.
they are conditioned to believe that other professions are not good snough for them so they waste their time in school yearning to become what they are not working to become.
I am sure that if a survey was done in the prisons and you would find that many of the inmates had similar dreams of becoming that great professional. You would also find that most of them did not even attempt to be qualified for that dream, and many will still pour scorn on other professions like teaching, nursing, farming, law enforcment and entepreneurship.

Re: Jamaica Gleaner News - LETTER OF THE DAY: Fray's sentence too harsh - Letters - Sunday | October 11, 2009

To say that Fray is "clearly mentally ill" seem erroneous to me. There is nothing 'clear' about mental illness. (my opinion) as the conclusions dawn by psychologist and psychiatrists are based on opinions of what is normal behaviour and also based on what is considered as acceptable behaviour.
Normal behaviour is society based and so is acceptable behaviour.
I have knowledge of an individual who read about the symtoms of a 'bipolar' illness and decided to exibit the symtoms. She did and a well known psychiatrist in Jamaica diagnosed her with the symtoms and started to treat her for the same. She was incarcerated at the time and she used her 'illness' as an excuse to be taken out of the facility to other places for treatment.
I am sure that if a search was done, a psychitrist could have been found that would look at the behaviour of Mr. Fray and conclude that he is a calculated criminal who planned his own defence just in case he was caught.
I would offer that a person who plans and execute such a plot as Mr. Fray did was just a person seeking fame and maybe fortune at the expense of the lives of others. I also offer that he planned to get away with it.
If he is mentally ill, was it a sudden attack? Was there signs before? Did his loving family seek help for him? Did any of his friends sought to report his strangeness?
The court must maintian its consistency in dealing with interpreting and enforcing the law of the land while making sure that persons are justly dealt with. I notice that we are more concerned with justice for the criminal than we are for justice for the victims.
Will any of the passengers develop mental illness because of the trauma that they went through? Who cares?
A man stole some money from a policeman's car and stated that he planned to take it back. He was sentenced to prison when the judge found out that he had stolen before at the same place, the police station. I would think that if we are concerned about justice and the fair treatment of 'mentally ill' persons, then this man needs an evaluation. Who in there right mind steals from a police station in jamaica? Is it that this man is too far down on the societal ladder to suffer from a mental illness? He is just a theif!
We need to stop making excuses for criminals!

Re: Jamaica Gleaner News - Hibbert will not quit, Politician declares innocence in Mabey and Johnson affair - Lead Stories - Saturday | September 26, 2009

I am not surprised! Our politicians are without shame. If he was even caught on camera accepting a bribe he would still remain in his seat. The other members of parliament are not going to demand that he resign either. " He who is without sin cast the first stone".
In some countries where the politicians and the people still believe in some sort of decency, honour, and respect, he would have resigned a long time ago. We are aware that Dudus is the head of one of the most fortified garrissons in the Caribbean. Tivoli has one of the lowest reported crime rate in Jamaica. That is so, as many of the crimes in west kingston is not reported to official sources, they are reported to Dudus. He has more Power in West kingston than the member of parliament. When the US speaks about obstruction of justice, they are refering to the fact that if he is deported then it would be the end of the bruce golding administration. Bruce cannot allow him to be extradited. That is the reason for the silence of the minister of justice...she is caught between a rock and a golding opportunity (pun intended) to administer justice and break away from political endorsment of criminals.
This is a lose lose for bruce and the JLP.
Let us stop pretending that he is an ordinary criminal. The JLP has always promised bread and butter. Freeness, freeness, freeness! They cannoytdeliver the freeness that they promised and they knew it long before the election. However, misleading people in order to gain political power is one of the timeless strategies that works all over the world.
The JLP did not tell anyone that the crisis in the country was caused by worldwide recession. They told us it as because of the PNP. After they won the election they revealed that they cannot solve the country's problem because it was due to worldwide events that they have no control over. Why am I not surprised?

Re: Jamaica Gleaner News - Shaggy rescues 'little ones' again - Lead Stories - Thursday | August 27, 2009

I am heatened by the involvement of this great artist and person. This has been voiced by individuals and organizations for years. This unity has never been played out in any significant way, neither by the political leaders nor by the supporters of the parties.
The reality is that political ambition has always taken precedence over the welfare of our country. A show of unity will only show that the parties have common interests and common goals for the development of Jamaica and its people.
The parties survive and remain politically viable by "opposing', opposing opposing". The very existence of the parties is base on the divisions that they create among the people. The parties use polls to test the division and when the polls reveal that some persons are not taking sides (the undecided) ways are designed to "reach' them.
The deeper our ecconomic crisis become the more we will blame one party or another. this will ensure that we are divided and that the political parties have support.
I doubt that there will ever be any unity among political parties in Jamaica.

Re: Jamaica Gleaner News - 'King' Obama? - News - Wednesday | August 5, 2009

How can you survey 500 persons and call it a "significant" number of Jamaicans?

Re: Jamaica Gleaner News - 'King' Obama? - News - Wednesday | August 5, 2009

The majority of the persons interviewed did not know about the Common Wealth. Jane reader I thank you for your Thoughts.
We as a nation have been struggling with the relics of colonialism and status symbols, to the point where we have isolated a vast majority of our population. Marriage is only important to those who need vows and contracts in order to be "faithful" and to be good parents.
There are also those who cannot serve the Lord our God unless the are having sex under a contract.
My parents were not married and that did not affect my nurturing. I am not married and I am caring for my children and grooming them with good values.
We do not need to emphasize the little things that marginalize our people, but instead we need to dwell on the issues that will make us better. Education will allow individuals to make better choices.
Let us educate our people and not force them into marriage.

Re: Jamaica Gleaner News - No reparations in my name - Letters - Tuesday | August 4, 2009

One of the reasons for our "poverty" as a nation is that we do not tap the "wealth' that is within us as a people.
