I had dinner there recently and was seriously under-whelmed. None of the food was bad, but the only item that really left an impression was the sardine skeleton, which is noteworthy more because of its novelty rather than any culinary appeal. All the courses in our prix-fixe meal were prepared well, but I never once found myself thinking, "Wow, this is really good." The service consisted of little more than bringing out each course (in somewhat erratic timing) and then disappearing completely, often leaving us wanting for more bread or water.

I know it's dangerous to start comparing restaurant prices, but I think it's fair game with prix-fixe menus, and as we were leaving, I couldn't help but think that Torrisi also has a $50 dollar set menu which is world's better in every manner (with the possible exception of decor, though I appreciate Torrisi's hap-hazard crowded charm) and really serves to highlight ISA's many shortcomings.

Re: http://brooklynglutton.com/post/11568482341

I would have warned you if I'd known you were heading out to Bluebird to pick up some beans- I've stopped by several times over the last week or two and the shelves are always empty. Perhaps the new owners don't order as many, so as not to let them go stale on the shelf... I imagine the turnover is fairly low.

On a recent trip to the new Cafe Grumpy on the LES, I did discover what is likely the most affordable Kenyan coffee to be had in NYC. It's not my favorite but still produces a really delicious cup that is unmistakably Kenyan:

http://www.cafegrumpy.com/s...

Abraco used to carry whole beans, and still does on occassion, but now it seems to be fairly arbitrary when they have them on offer (much like their hours of operation, I suppose). For instance, before embarking on a recent vacation, they had bags for sale so as to ensure their loyal customers wouldn't whither from withdrawal while they were closed. Sadly, Counter Culture doesn't (or perhaps is not allowed to) sell the proprietary Abraco blend on their website.

Good to know that EE carries CC beans... there are fewer and fewer retail establishments that do so in the city, evidently.

I'm heading out to L.A. this weekend for a quick trip and I'll bring you back a bag if I can track down some beans from Handsome Roasters (formed recently by three guys who left Intelligentsia to have a go on their own).

BTW, if you're ever stuck for a decent cup:

http://goo.gl/maps/vCek

...and finally, just to balance all this coffee-geekdom:

http://bit.ly/qfEY8Y

<dc:creator fallen (Abraco was quick enough to snag one during the changeover) since the new owners took over, but I don't find them unfriendly, and it's still a more than adequate place to get a cup of coffee. Plus, they still carry Counter Culture beans and so you can always minimize your barista interaction if necessary and just buy a bag.

The National on Rivington also sells CC beans.

The best way though is probably directly from the CC website- they will ship within one day of roasting and they charge a flat rate of $5 no matter how many bags you buy. You could order both varieties of Kenyan for $37 total.

Also highly recommended:

http://www.tonx.org

<a href="http://www.handsomecoffee.com/" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" recommend Counter Culture who always has one (or more) Kenyan offerings in their "Micro-Lot" series, and they happen to be priced a little more modestly while losing none of the quality:

<a href="http://counterculturecoffee.com/kenya?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=209&category_id=8" rel="nofollow noopener" In essence what I'm saying is what you said: we are fighting a marathon and not a race, we must understand that this is a struggle of pace: take things as they come and make progress at every turn where possible, be steady and find your opportunities, but never let go of your position and struggle on. Instead, we huff and puff and act like fools and run around in circles.... ok, ok, enough... I had good bourbon today: George Stagg, Woodford, Michter's and a little Four Roses at dinner... life is grand.

Re: JPS

truth be told i'm not surprised that there isn't much attention paid to high quality coffee in india. the coffee drinking culture there has traditionally been all about various preparations of instant coffee (whipped and mixed with sugar and milk for cold coffee, or mixed with chicory, etc.) and while in recent years, there has been a huge proliferation of coffee houses and kiosks in the vein of starbucks, we all know how much those types of places do for promoting high quality coffee.

Re: whitneymcn on tumblr's Tumblelog

well that was easy:

http://portorico.com/store/...

though i can't speak to the quality-- will report back, and also hit up shotzombies for suggestions. does he work as a barista?
