My goodness I hope the teachers don't believe that 60% is the same as almost two thirds as its almost an 11% (average MSP annual pay rise) variation. Such electoral number differences meant that Alex Salmond was consigned to a Russian TV, and as Malcom Gladwell proves in his latest book is the fraction between surviving in the Adriatic for ten hours and Jermery Corbyn.

BASIC means basic, except that it does not. Microsoft has made a lot of money calling its programming offer Basic (add prefix as appropriate). As a result there is a lot of confusion. I am an expert (:-)) and recommend simply #horsesforcourses. Sometimes you have to make a leap from one level to another - I am not convinced that BASIC has a role to play ....#soz

Unlike the crowd, who were clearly excitable, good class colleagues are tolerant of SEN. The problem is lack of resources and a numbers attitude from those away from the front line for too long.

I am trying to remember back to my youth (its school hols here so cannot ask anyone else) and as my Dad says "Chemistry is caught not taught" so it was the new graduate teacher who inspired us with sp orbitals - stuff which had not made the curriculum as yet, then. In Physics it was the wave tank, not the teacher but I do remember Mr Harrington. But it was maths I nearly took up as I enjoyed the problem solving - fortunately I realised it would be difficult to get a job and that there is plenty of numeracy in such as Applied Physics & Electronics which I was lucky enough to study at Durham University.

In Scotland the government has decided to raise all boats ("address attainment gap") by introducing national exams at 3 stages in Primary: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/u... This has lately resulted in a narrowing of focus on numeracy & literacy. I have some sympathy since for years many reached FE without these skills so I dispute exams "privilege the few".

¨Performance-related pay is an insult to good teachers¨ There is a presumption here that the basic rate of teacher´s pay is adequate - not the case in places where it is expensive to live nor in the diversity of the market economy as represented by FE. I certainly would not have been insulted if I had received a bonus for all the extra (compared to some others) work I did.

Last para & non PGCE route. I did not get accepted onto local Teaching Course (nor DLITE) so last yr I went down south & got a DoE organised trip to 3 schools (Grammar, ex-Comp, new Academy) ... the qualification system is complex (& getting more so, I suspect) but it is not IMHO the free-for-all it might appear.
