You got us off to a great start with badges last week. Take a look at the Open Badges we made today for each other, and will be applying for with actual projects that we did in the Youth Voices Summer Program - Connected Learning with the New York City Writing Project at Lehman College.

Look for each of our student's applications and their peer assessments of each others' work using these badges.

http://youthvoices.net/badg...

Re: Digital Media and Learning Competition 5

Thanks Vance! You should make a badge for making connections across continents, your expertise.

Re: Digital Media and Learning Competition 5

It's been amazing to watch you grow over the past two years, Ruth (Johnnycash0). I wish we had badges to represent the shifts you make between Spanish and English, online management of twitter, YouTube, Facebook accounts for musicians ... and your work in school -- for example your inquiry into Lincoln.

Re: Digital Media and Learning Competition 5

It will be interesting to see how the five teachers in the Youth Voices Summer Program find their own space for inquiry and passion while also learning from/with/alongside the youths.

Re: Digital Media and Learning Competition 5

I've been looking at the Smithsonian's Digital Badging Workshop: http://dmlcompetition.net/p... and what's interesting to think about -- in addition to the whole mentorship-research design -- is the way the teens are designing badges that will be displayed for other teens to define Quests they might also want to take. It's no small matter to ask youths to both do something that moves from one of their personal interests into a passion, but also to ask them to--(almost) at the same time--drop breadcrumbs along their path so that other youths might join them there. Could we call badges breadcrumbs?

Re: Digital Media and Learning Competition 5

Badges about badging?! Thanks. Seriously, Chad, thank you for pointing out important questions. I'm wondering, now how I'm going to answer your question when it comes from a student, "What's a project?" And I want to say that it's about finding a problem and developing some answers for it. I trust young people to find their own paths, and I feel confident to be on those paths with them -- mentoring, cajoling, wondering, praising, waiting. As far your questions about single project or several smaller projects. I think we are safer going for the smaller ones, and just letting them add up to something bigger when they do. How have you and your students been deciding on what gets badged in your experiments with badging?

Re: Digital Media and Learning Competition 5

I like that youths can go to just one workshop or attend all four for a bigger experience. I'm wondering where content comes into the process. Will some of your youths end up talking about a similar question across media? I wonder if these youths will be able to show their teachers what they learned this summer.

Re: Writing and Reading Class Blogs on Teachers Teaching Teachers tonight (in 6.25 hours)

LinkedIn
------------

I'd like to add you to my professional network on LinkedIn.

- Paul

Paul Allison
Tech Liaison New York City Writing Project at National Writing Project Greater New York City Area

Confirm that you know Paul Allison: https://www.linkedin.com/e/...
--
You are receiving Invitation to Connect emails. In fact, there's plenty to add to the description here about how to get students to:
1) really SEE (How do you get them to describe in detail? If language actually helps us see more, as I think it does, how do we invite young people to write, look, write, look write...)
2) really THINK when responding (How do we get students to capture the fleeting, seemingly unconnected ideas that pass through their minds... then write, and find the connections in the mess.)
3) really WONDER (How do we get students to question deeply, to expand their speculation, to speculate on the speculations, and to reflect on what their questions might come from and be leading to?)

Writing and writing and freewriting and focused writing and more freewriting is the key to all three of these.

Re: New Journalism

I grimaced when I heard that mistake too.
