If by "cherry-picked" you mean "QUOTED," then yes: I selected and pasted one piece of what Laura wrote instead of pasting her whole damn response into my reply to you. GUILTY AS CHARGED!

At the risk of cherry-picking yet AGAIN, Laura actually wrote, "we'll be more careful about talking up vegetarian items in the future, and focus on the awesome vegan stuff." Which is, you know, different that what you wrote.

But yeah, recommending vegetarian stuff isn't what anyone wants VS to be about! So, glad we agree, Alex!

Re: "Beautifull!" Open in the Inner Sunset

Yes, they only have a handful of vegan options -- as in seventeen, if you look at the menu.

It wasn't thumbs up. It was more like, "Meh, this place is OK."

Also, weird that you thought that Laura seemed to think the place deserved VS being disappointed in it, since what she wrote was: "Also, I'm vegan and I totally want to check out Beautifull now so we all had different reactions in terms of it being a good place for vegans."

Re: vegansaurus! · San Francisco Vegan Guide, IT'S AWESOME.

Imagine if they could modify these gigantic robo seals with weapons to have them protect real seals from people with clubs. I'm pretty sure I just described the plot of the next film to sweep the Oscars. Or, the next episode in the Terminator franchise.

Re: "Beautifull!" Open in the Inner Sunset

Cindy, this post isn't different at all from stuff VS has written about Mission Burger; that place had 1 (one!) vegan burger. Beautifull! has quite a few.

Re: "Beautifull!" Open in the Inner Sunset

Yeah, apparently the "inclusion" thing doesn't work so well with some people. But, I liked your points, MR!

Re: "Beautifull!" Open in the Inner Sunset

Kristin, you must be pretty new to Vegansaurus if a post about the vegan options in a primarily non-vegan establishment bothers you. Or, you know, living in some weird alternate reality called Crazy Town.

So let me break it down for you. Vegansaurus has always covered the openings of non-vegan restaurants in the SF area; we've put the pressure on restaurant owners before their new places open to add vegan options to their menus, we've praised primarily non-vegan establishments that have added vegan options to their menu, we've dissed supposedly-progressive eateries that provide nothing vegan, and we've REALLY dissed the bacon-loving hipster foodie movement. Shit, girl, one of the craziest most vegan crazies who founded VS, Laura B, even wrote something defending a non-vegan place that fried something vegan in non-vegan oil one time (Mission Burger, RIP!), saying how it was delicious and we should forgive them and support them for at least trying.

While it might offend your very, very delicate sensibilities to read about a place that serves non-vegan cookies, I think that mostly, VS has always taken a more inclusive approach, in hopes that more people might start eating vegan by being exposed to vegan foods (in non-vegan places), and by seeing that, unlike you, not all vegans are crazy.

Also, I hadn't heard that this place rapes animals! But dang, Kristin, that's pretty crazy -- you should call the cops!

Re: vegansaurus! · San Francisco Vegan Guide, IT'S AWESOME.

It's not fake, Megan. Rats are smarter than the average critter, so they're a little more difficult. You have two options: no-kill traps, and repellents. The bad news: since these methods interfere with each other, it's best to use only one or the other.

If you do chose to use repellents, you'll get the best results from using a combination of a taste repellent (which makes your food taste bad to rats) that is safe for produce, and a predator smell deterrent. "What the heck is that?" you ask. Which brings us to the good news: coyote urine powder!

Yes, having your garden eaten by cute little rats can be a downer. But it's pretty dang cool to have an excuse to buy something called "coyote urine powder." I kind of wish I had rats now!

Re: The Telling Compulsion

Originally, I had written, "Dang, globalization's so complicated!"

Re: Friday link-o-rama: Tomato cocktails, Michael Pollan has a sad, "dangerous" foods & more!

Kind of a skewed reading of Pollan. To me, it seems like he gives pretty fair reading of feminist discourse on cooking.

It's more like he's trying to say, via Beauvoir, that while cooking has traditionally been one of a variety of oppressive household chores that have been dumped on women without them having a choice, any human making food and enjoying themselves while doing it is a good thing. Which seems very much in line with his endless yapping about how growing, preparing, and eating food should be valued a lot more than it is today in the US.

It's a pretty sensible thing to say. While it's understandable (and probably necessary) if some 1st wave feminists rejected cooking, to automatically equate cooking with oppression is, in hindsight, counterproductive.

Kind of like how in this article (http://www.nytimes.com/2009... black urban farmer Will Allen acknowledges that while some black people may have some bad feelings about farming because of sharecroppers, ultimately farming can be a positive and very empowering thing.

Re: guerrilla curatorship - Both the uniqueness and the integrity of the...

Sorry -- it's not me, it's my Comp Lit disease!

The "private" v. "public" idea has something going to for it for sure. But as for the rest...

1) I doubt these older generations who supposedly experienced these superior originals actually had access to them.

2) The difference between replica and original is pretty arbitrary, especially nowadays. We're not in the age of mechanical reproduction anymore -- we're in the age of digital reproduction, and reproductions can be pretty stunning. Besides, most art has always been derivative and based on reproduction.

3) What this dude sees as impoverishment of the sensual and aesthetic life of each individual, I'd see more as the democratization of aesthetics. This is elitist in a ton of ways.
