Matthew, Mike - it's difficult to truly get where you're coming from with sweeping generalizations about how "communities are bad for art", then using No Age as an example of a mediocre band giving too much credence to a scene, then saying it's not about No Age, then citing Fugazi and Eddie Vedder as examples of iconoclastic artists.

Half this conversation you two are having is baffling to me, but I think it's tied up in the fact that there's too many points of entry for this discussion - are we talking about the quality of No Age? the worth of music scenes? the nature of the critical discourse surrounding No Age (or flavor-of-the-month indie bands in general)? Art vs commerce? The foresight of Pitchfork's 9 rating? All of these questions would take me, personally, on different courses.

Re: Fluxtumblr - Abridged Conversation With Mike from ClapClap.org

xpost with your DC followup.

Re: Fluxtumblr - Abridged Conversation With Mike from ClapClap.org

I get that - understood that it's not a premeditated, edited-for-consumption post.

I'm not trying to be antagonistic about it - I feel like there are three or four great topics to get into between what you two are saying, what I'm saying, and what a few others are saying on their blogs too - but it's all blurring together.

Re: Fluxtumblr

I did a post about this a while back—not remotely intellectual in any way—noting an LA Times article that ran down quotes from Clinton, Obama, and McCain on pop culture. Obama's favorite show is the Wire; Clinton said American Idol and Grey's Anatomy—which I kinda found despicable because even this simple question was an opportunity to pander. The best answer, though, was McCain, who said his favorite show was Prisonbreak. When asked what his favorite music was, he said his tastes pretty much stopped in the late sixties because, you know, he was captured by the Viet Cong and was a POW for a few years. Good answer!

Re: Fluxtumblr

I was always partial to Burger Joint, a divey place hidden away inside the Parker Meridian hotel around 57th street or so. I don't know a lot about emusic, but so far it's looking like it might be the place for me to fill in back catalogue titles that I never got around to buying and that are never at the top of my list at the actual record store.

Re: incidentals and accidentals - That men’s singles final, which Nadal won deep in...

The way Federer gets an ace every time he needs one is mystifying. But at the Callahan show, you could sense in the audience that people thought he was being too harsh. It wasn't a bar full of obnoxious drunks; it was a record store full of stone-cold sober fans who (unlike Callahan) were appreciative of the intimate experience. Callahan's attitude for the whole night was that he could've done without the entire concert, nevermind the two people requesting a song.
