The Oculus Service constantly records events into this log and it contains everything.

Right after bootup, you should see a line like: NVidia driver found. Installed version: 10.18.13.6472 Required version: 10.18.13.6191 (OK)
If it complains here, it will see your HMD connect, but not acknowledge it.

It will also log live whenever your devices are plugged in / pulled out.

When HMD and sensor are correctly plugged in, the USB ports are in order and the GPU driver is okay, the service will eventually print this line:
Connected devices: hmd, 1 cam

Also monitor what happens when you start up an app and the HMD won't turn on. One possible problem is that the graphics card is unable to handle the resolution. With an older GPU I e.g. got this error:

18:19:06.733 {!ERROR!} [Errors] OVR Error:
Code: -3000 -- ovrError_Initialize
System error: -1529741307 (a4d20005) -- (unknown)
Description: Not enough bandwidth to support required video mode.
OVRTime: 280708.031567
Time: 2016-04-10 18:19:06 [733:999:700]

Re: Great comic on creative work in the Internet age

TL;DR

Re: I am worried about the future of Python - www.ironfroggy.com

Virtual functions are no problem. If you don't cachegrind your stuff, the performance hit is only in your head. If you keep going like this, you'll find yourself completely paralyzed by (often outdated) implementation knowledge in just a few years. (On a sidenote, as a general insight: picking a language "because it's performant" is premature optimization. Not that you said that, just wanted to put it out there.)

Re: I am worried about the future of Python - www.ironfroggy.com

Yeah, they have to stop doing that. Their Android SDK isn't language agnostic, but it should be. It's neat that they provide a few ready to use solutions for people who just want to build apps, but it's really no good for the kind of stuff I'd like to do. Having to use JRI to call system functions that are exclusively available in Java, which actually wrap functions in C libraries is schizophrenic. I know all the rationale behind this and honestly I don't care for the excuses and the grand visions. This is messed up. Hint: I'd like to do unreasonable stuff.

Re: I am worried about the future of Python - www.ironfroggy.com

That err... we need to come back in a few years and see what node.js actually gifted us with ;-)

Re: I am worried about the future of Python - www.ironfroggy.com

But when is the attachment "overly"? You're getting dangerously close to a tautology: when a tool is badly suited, you're overly attached. when you're overly attached, you're using the wrong tool - there is zero information in this: "If you do something bad, something bad happens. Something bad happened, therefore what you did was bad."

I'm in the process of using the "wrong tool" for the job, namely writing performance critical applications like 3D graphics rendering or sound synthesis within Python (on top of PyPy). I like the idea of Python as a general purpose tool, and would prefer to spend less time with the classical solutions (C/C++). Plus, I don't really think there is much to learn from other _languages_, just from other implementations. I am "overly attached" to Python. The language is exactly what I love. We can all agree that the present implementation has not been written with efficiency in mind, but that can be fixed. To tackle such a task needs passion and belief. This is one of these "unreasonable man" projects you've been hearing about.

Re: The vim learning curve is a myth

It's great that you like vim, but it's not the tool that makes you.

Re: I am worried about the future of Python - www.ironfroggy.com

I believe you need a bit of cheering up. After twenty years of programming, of which I spent a lot of time doing stuff in C/C++ and Python, I decided life is too short to waste it on programming languages that aren't fun for me, and therefore I would devote my free time to advancing my favorite language, Python, beyond the realms of what we thought is wise or rational given current implementations, and rather prepare for the golden age appropriately.

I'm working on a pure Python 3D game engine, "Beige", which is loosely based on the Blender Game Engine and runs on top of PyPy, and developed in parallel with a first person game, "Ginshu". Development of the game will still take at least two years, but the plan is to get the engine to a stage where it is well documented and ready to write professional, modern, shippable games. It's not particularly difficult work, just a lot of do.

Re: I am worried about the future of Python - www.ironfroggy.com

Why not get attached? Our first article in english language, thanks a lot for reporting! I agree, starting with that price tag was a bit hefty, but we thought that's what the final game would be worth. Personally, I'm kind of torn between letting people see work in progress and keeping it all a secret until it's done. This way we're kind of putting up a barrier thick enough to not spoil it for everyone. It kind of turns the whole project into an uphill battle, but so far it's been motivating for us to live up to the promise which the price tag gives you.

Also fitting title. I've been listening to Space Oddity for weeks recently.

Re: Picoid - Bottleship

Very nice :)

Re: Picoid - Bottleship

BSOD? :)

Re: Picoid - Bottleship

Is this Spiderman?
