I think it's worth considering that, as pointed out in a followup piece at The Awl, White and Lowery (and a lot of people discussing this) sort of end up agreeing that artists should be making more money but don't have a solution for that quite yet. Lowery notes that fans are still willing to pay handsomely for the tools they use to listen to music so it's not necessarily a question of whether they care about paying to get it—they might just need a gentle nudge to put some of that cash toward the actual tunes. Artists have a connection to fans that’s more direct that ever right now so it seems like they have a great chance to shift this conversation—and the funds—in their direction. (And many are doing this!) They obviously shouldn’t HAVE to re-convince people music is worth paying for but maybe that’s just a final hurdle to clear on the way to the “fewer middlemen, more money for musicians” situation everyone seems to want.

Yes! I wish I could remember what he actually said. It was pretty good—something about the odd dynamics of a rock audience and how nobody would stand up until they felt comfortable standing up. It ended with him doing a sort of slow, exaggerated "all rise" motion with both hands and everyone who was still seated popping up to relieved applause.

I was just kidding! That was actually a question that I asked so I thought it was pretty amusing that his answer included a bunch of semi-well-known bloggers just staring into the camera. I think it might be my favorite VYou response so far. That site has produced some interesting stuff but I can't keep myself motivated to participate, for some reason.

The self-curation can be an odd process. It really made me think about what I'd written/posted and why it seemed good in the first place. Good luck!
