I was mildly surprised the newest round of iPhones didn’t have USB-C ports already. Guaranteed the next ones will.

That used to be a good reason to buy Apple. They weren’t concerned with being the very bleeding edge. They wanted anyone to pick up one of their products and have it just work.

That is still part of their philosophy but their stuff is buggier than it used to be, as though they’re in a race with the Android platform to get each innovation out there first. Android used to function as a sort of imitation iPhone and mobile tech test bed—it wouldn’t exist without the iPhone, but it just has to be a step ahead, whether its innovations are ready for release or not, and regardless of whether the market wants them.

Now Apple is doing that. Touch ID was simply great. Apple has patents for a Touch ID sensor beneath the screen, giving them all-important screen real estate by eliminating the home button. So what did they do? They bet the farm on Face ID, months before COVID put every customer in a mask and making the feature amazingly inconvenient while simultaneously robbing screen real estate. It was bleeding edge innovation for its own sake, Android style. Face ID is fine at home, but it doesn’t work when you have to wear a mask.

New iOS features are great but the platform crashes more and is more prone to security breaches than ever.

So I hung on to my iPhone X right up to when the 5G model came out. Daughter is now using the X and it still works fine. I put up with the decline in “Appleness” because the phones still crash less than Android based devices, and in my job I need that phone to work.

Come on, hair splitter. A democracy (Latin root: “rule by the people”) can take multiple forms. Our founders wanted government of, by, and for the people (a democracy) but recognized that direct democracy in the form of putting every question to a plebiscite is a recipe for rapid disaster. The main reasons are that (1) ain’t nobody got time for that; (2) regular folks don’t have enough information to make votes on specialized issues meaningful; and (3) King Demos is an awful and capricious tyrant.

So they secured Democracy in America by providing a two-step representative system with a strong executive on the national level, intertwined with similar smaller systems at the state and local levels, defining which spheres of life were to fall within the jurisdiction of the central authority while the rest of life’s questions were to be decided more locally according to local exigencies and preferences.

This removal of direct democracy in favor of multi-layered representative democracy with strong protections for individual autonomy gave each person far more say in the running of his life than a direct democracy. A federal republic constrained by popularly-adopted constitutional ground rules is obviously far from perfect. It’s been described as “all brakes and no engine.” But the “engine” is the dangerous part, so restricting power and diffusing it as much as possible can be very helpful in maintaining a free people.

This system is indeed democracy. It was the most Democratic system ever devised, in the sense that the people were constitutionally guaranteed the right to rule their own lives as they saw fit, and were given a decisive voice in the choosing of leaders and shaping of the laws.

Don’t you dare sully this republic by branding it a non-democracy. Our Founding Fathers designed it to be the best democracy that ever was. To the extent we’re able to stay within the vision of federal, representative, constitutionally limited government, our system is still one of the best democracies.

What you mean to say is we don’t have a “direct democracy.” But neither did the Greeks. The failed city-states were based on a form of direct democracy but they still elected leaders who then did indeed make decisions. Direct democracy has no leadership. It has never been done. It is impossible.

Anyone who insists the United States was not founded as a democracy must admit that by their strained definition, “democracy” has never existed and can never exist.

Yet here we have Abraham Lincoln, the first REPUBLICAN president, waxing rhapsodic about government of, by, and for the people (Democracy).

Your definitions are crazy. Our Founders wanted democracy (rule of the people) and designed the republic so we could have as much of it as possible.

Be proud of it.

When the progressives talk about “our democracy” they use the possessive because they mean they get to vote but not you and me. It’s the possessive they put in front that is worrisome. I’d be just as worried if they called it “our republic.” It isn’t theirs and they’ve no business thinking it is.
