I'm a scrub that could beat a pro. An underdog whose victory could outshine a pro performance.

Re: Analyzing the Problems with FGC eSports

Brad makes the claim, and rightfully so. Let me put it this way. Who are pros playing against? Other pros. It's no different than scrubs playing against scrubs. It's a level playing ground where the only deciding factor is a moment's hesitation. If they were a scrub, however, and could beat a pro that would be something of merit. Pro status in the FGC is nothing worth bragging about as all pros that face other pros exhibit the same tactics, strategies, and mentality. They can't think outside the box, and stick to a meta formula that has become their community idol.

Re: Analyzing the Problems with FGC eSports

Have you won evo? As far as "the community" goes all I've encountered and seen are elitist braggarts who are nothing more than copy & paste versions of each other. All doing the same by-the-book in-game dance, and spouting the same elitist garbage online.

Re: Analyzing the Problems with FGC eSports

I didn't say online only. I said players can exploit exploitable features and characters at a scrub level, local or online, and still do at least decently as a pro or evo participant. I'm getting the feeling this is a prove Brad wrong campaign. If it is you are in for a treat cause i don't back down from a good debate.

Re: Analyzing the Problems with FGC eSports

Are you saying someone can't be good outside evo? How, in your ignorance, do you think pros get to evo? They get good outside of evo on their own time.

Re: Analyzing the Problems with FGC eSports

I compared myself to Daigo under the assumption that we are able to understand the games on a different level than a player who has not evolved along with the genre. I can see that in how Daigo plays. As far as competing goes I have competed against other players, but not in the tournament scene. One popular misconception among the FGC is that a player has to have become an eSports pro or have competed in the tournament scene to understand a fighting game on an eSports pro level. This couldn't be further from the truth.

Technicalities, and technical application can be applied and understood by anyone willing to simply observe and mimic. Where I differ from Daigo, and most pros is that I don't adhere to pro standards. By that I mean I do not play the meta or train against meta inclined training dummies. In that sense I'm a step above in that I can adapt on the fly instead of relying on my studying of set in stone methods, or methods that have become a staple of FGC play. In general FGC tournament participants expect to see opponents play characters in a routine manner, at least at base level. It's why pros can get beat by mashing, and bashing scrubs, or unorthodox play styles. It's why pros get beat by lagswitchers whereas I can adapt to game breaking lag, and still win. I'd say I'm pro or above pro in that regard. Skill does vary, and there is no doubt a hierarchy of skill, but when a scrub can beat a pro who then is the pro?

Re: Analyzing the Problems with FGC eSports

The current problem I see facing the eSports FGC scene is that it's basically a circus, or a sideshow meant for the views and viewer attendance. The publicity and the hype that rakes in the cash. It is being used as a hype machine to peddle copies of the latest fighting game to the at home gamer, and nothing else. The games themselves have all but lost their competitive base features, and have become wholly unbalanced in doing so. They are dumbed down, and diluted with easy to use, and abuse mechanics and characters to attract a less than competitive crowd. A crowd that is sold on looking good at any cost, but not willing to put in the time to actually get good.

It's why you don't see a lot of new eSports FGC competitors coming into the spotlight. Where an average player could once get good through dedicated practice they are now only allowed to play on an even level with others (using do or die techniques) or lose horribly to those who are pros turned God. In making the competition casual, and causing it to lose it's core competitive values it not only dumbs down the competitive value, but it also makes the spectacle less than impressive to watch. Madness incarnate,if you will. You can see it in these flashy anime fighters where there's an over saturation of onscreen action that loses the viewer in the crazy projectiles, and fancy fast paced maneuvers. This ultimately does away with the once crucial, and respectful nature of simply dodging, parrying, or attacking in an expert fashion. In the latter experiences you could sense the pivotal moments in a fighting game match, but that has been traded for a flash for cash business mentality where showmanship reigns supreme over actual legit competition.

Another thing is that this faux competition has it's own set of rules that only apply at the tournament scenes, and not for at home gamers. Thus further leading gamers to believe falsely that they too can be the next Daigo without realizing tournament players like Daigo usually have to avoid exploits, and certain characters while competing for prizes. The cake is a lie, more or less. Companies through the hype are lying to the gamer while stealing from them the opportunity to truly "Git Gud". What they don't tell the new generation of fighting game players is players like me, and Daigo earned our place among the knowledgeable by playing the harder fighting games, and figuring things out for ourselves. The kind of fighting game experiences without the flash, and easy to use/abuse nonsense. We were afforded a learning lesson that allowed us to see the change in the genre, and adapt in a more gradual and understanding fashion. To this day I can figure out most fighters before consulting the guides or tutorials by utilizing a set of unwritten rules. It is through my knowledge of early to modern fighting games I'm able to do this. I can literally feel out any characters' move set and accompanying mechanics without ever consulting a manual or tutorial. This is something newer generation fighting players can't understand, because they are handed everything on a silver platter.

In a roundabout way I'm basically saying fighting games have become less competitive, and more of a show. It is a genre corrupted by the greed associated with eSports, and those looking to make up lost money with eSports hype. A lot of flash and no substance for cash.

Re: Basics 101 in Smash + Grab Before the Beta

looks epic dude! It's atmosphere, and simplistic/straightforward theme wasn't as overly complex, or off-the-wall as later game releases. It seemed like an authentic archaeological game, and introduced for the first time the very lovely female protagonist Laura Croft. I absolutely loved the inclusion of Laura's fully interactive mansion, and false hope that there was really a nude code somewhere out there. I spent hours falling for all the code hype, and tried my hardest to make it work, Lol! Here's to hoping there's a legitimate nude code in this latest installation (A guy can dream can't he?).

Twitter: @OtakuDante

Re: GameNTrain Giveaway – Win 2800 Microsoft Points!

Brad Carver
otakudante1134 (at) gmail (dot) com
I'd get "Guilty Gear XX Accent Core" XBLA when it's released on the 24th!!!

Re: Tell me what you are playing this week and you could win a free year of Xbox LIVE Gold

As far as games I'm looking forward to I'd have to say "Worms Revolution" is my top pick!
