No wonder in the second half of 2009 the magazine saw a 34.9% decline in news stand sales, then in the first half of 2010, there was another decline of at least one third in Time magazine sales. In the second half of 2010, Time magazine newsstand sales declined by about 12% to just over 79 thousand copies per week and has continued on it downward trend ever since.

No one is buying this crap about..... if there was no monopoly on the Olympic Games and NBC was to do what is it currently doing, it would be guaranteed that all other media house would have out done them. When you have a monopoly on something you can throw the shti at the crowd and they just have to grovel in it. However, he who laughs last laugh best. Most people will move away from these losers at the end of the Olympics.

Re: Portia off to Olympics - News - Latest News - Jamaica Gleaner

This is not right. This is going to cost the Jamaican Government approximately US $60,000 daily for travel expense, hotel, meals and security cost. If the Prime Minister should stay five days that will run the country US$300,000.00. This is wasting tax payers money, when she should be at her desk trying to figure out how we are going to repay the IMF. All these politicians are living high on the hog at the expense of leaving our grandchildren with a heavy debt. Someone need to take note of how many days the Prime Minister has actually been in the country in the last 100 days.

Re: My Spanish Journal: A 'black sighting' was quite rare

Interesting how the insecurity of your color is used to define the situation you found yourself in that you choose to write about it. You would think it strange if a white European visiting Spanish Town write that he was on the look out for another caucasian in that city. Barcelona is one of the most cosmopolitan places in Europe to live and visit, you are assuming that the place you had breakfast was the waterhole for the locals and not the tourists, who are known to visit the city.

Re: US sprinter Dunn out of Olympics after doping test

Debbie Dunn is actually Jamaica born American athlete. Who will be next? Such a pity this rigorous drug testing was not around when the women's 100, 200 and 400 World records were set.

Re: Murder-suicide in St Elizabeth

This is wickedness!!!! Interestingly, " a friend who was taking the gifts to Jamaica had to leave the package behind at the airport in the UK due to overweight". What I find interesting is that the writer must have at the very last minute asked his friend to take these items to Jamaica, or had the intent of taking advantage of the person going to Jamaica to carry these item witout factoring the cost of overweight fee that would be levied on his friend the carrier.

These scenarios play out so often when someone decide to travel for a few days or a few weeks to Jamaica, then someone else comes along who hears that one is going to Jamaica and decide to add to the baggages with no consideration for the additional cost to deliver such items.

Sending 200 pounds to Jamaica could have bought all the items in question. The anger is normally directed towards a minority group or a group that have shouldered blames over generations. With only 2% of the Jamaican population adhering to Catholicism, they become an easy target and the Church critics will stir up the anger of the public with conjectures, innuendos and distortions. The majority of Jamaicans have no problem with the secrecy of the Catholic confession, so why now do we want to compare it to the fear of retaliation, the cowardice of those living in certain communities and the evils of wickedness growing daily in garrison communities.

Why try to make the Church in Jamaica the scapegoat for the widespread and systematic practice of police abuse, the egregious violations of human rights, the inability of the entire justice system to apprehend criminals and adequately protect the citizens of Jamaica? Where are the highly trained forensic scientist and ballistic experts? Where is blind justice? Why are the politicians not called to confess their evils deeds in parliament? So why now do we pick on the priest who listen to the confessions of a mere handful of faithful Catholics, who actually believe in the sacrament of penance.

We are all certain that there are many more who are aware of the criminal elements hiding in broad daylight among us, but we want to shift the blame to the Catholic priest and hide behind the pseudonym of a “free thinker

Re: Jamaica Gleaner News - PNPYO asks why Whiteman must go - News - Wednesday | November 18, 2009

Mr Whiteman should never have been given the position of High Commissioner to London in the first place. This is another example of high level of cronyism that was practiced under the previous government and continues under the current government. Mr Whiteman is an educator with over 30 years experience working in Education, having trained in Education leadership. There are Jamaicans who completed training in the area of International Relations/Affairs, Diplomacy who are highly qualified to head any of the Jamaican missions in foreign countries, however the government continue to place their cronies into these top position thus stymying the growth and dedication of highly trained Jamaican nationals who would serve far better in these positions. Hopefully the current government's intention is not to swap monkey for black dog (no pun intended). When will Jamaican learn that the country need not RE-ELECT these old folks with no idea. They never had any idea about good governance when they were in their 30s and 40s and pass 50s it is all about keeping the status quo in order that they can make some money in their old age and get thru the next day. If you choose to be a bigoted Christian and decide to use your personal Christian belief system to discriminate and cause harm to others (those who may share and others who may not share the belief system) then one should be made to account for it.

In 2002, Muslims systematically killed more than 400 Christians in Nigeria in the name of the prophet Mohammed. No one should be allowed to discriminate, more so bring harm to anyone else base on a choice of religion or any other perceived difference. It has transcended generations, it's widely shared, and it's learned from an early age. Even otherwise decent, honorable people are pulled into it and made to lose their moral compass. Hate is used as power to attack those we perceive as different and we launch attacks as defenders disguised with hate to protect our way of life. Those who perpetuate hate often believe that others share their biases. In fact, they often will say that everybody feels the way they do, or at least the majority.

Hate is rampant amongst our political leadership. It spills out on to the general populace and in return the hate continues from one group to another. Whatever group is determined to be at the lowest level of the rank will get the full brunt of all the hate, which was dispersed from our leaders.
People who are victims of this kind of hate have no redress, since they cannot look to the authority or the leaders to stop the hatred.

Jamaicans must always remember who the hatred emanates from. It displays itself not just in what is being tossed around now, but it has divided neighbors and communities. Turn areas in political garrison. All at the doing of these political bosses.

Leaders are supposed to be able to see the future where things are better, and work towards bringing that change about. Not divide a country into political faction of hate and add fan the flame after throwing fuel to the fire of hating one group over another. They are suppose to be able to imagine 20, 30 years, even 100 year down the road and see that tomorrow will bring with it changes that will not include biases and discrimination, and is able to start the transformation today.

No one is pushing for gay marriage in Jamaica, however it is used as a way to fan the fires of hate and distract from the real issues existing in the country. The issue is about discrimination, and since the leaders have chosen not to address this issue, we can all be guaranteed that they will not address any other issue concerning the development of the country. It is there intention to have the country eating out of their hands like the slave masters did, divided in house and field and kept them in contention with each other.

Re: Jamaica Gleaner News - Dangers of majority views - Letters - Thursday | October 22, 2009

Jamaica does not exist in a vacuum. Our leaders and our people cannot continue to export its backwardness and discrimination to CIVILIZED societies under the pretext of God-fearing and using the Bible as a pretense to justify injustice. We never agreed with apartheid in South Africa, and we stood up with other leaders of the world and voiced our opinion everyday during the reign of oppression. South Africa has emerged and has a constitution that is inclusive of everyone’s right.

Jamaica is a tourist haven for people from civilized and highly socially developed societies. People from places sharing the view of the PM and Opposition leader do not visit Jamaica.

Most Jamaicans when they migrate (and Jamaica has millions living overseas) move to CIVILIZED and highly socially developed societies. It is almost never that you will learn that a Jamaican has moved to a society that is equally oppressed as the one they are moving from.

How do we expect to assimilate into the rest of the world, while our leaders continue to show the lack of respect for civilized societies that we are dependent on.

We have seen how violence and injustice has been unleashed on our society, because of the ignorance of our leaders to grow.
