They can range anywhere from a week, to a weekend, to even one-day workshops. A great opportunity to connect with established writers and to develop community with developing writers who are on your same writing trajectory.

Examples: Squaw Valley Writer's Conference, the Palm Beach Poetry Festival, the Napa Valley Writers Conference. A more detailed list can be found at http://www.newpages.com/wri... and at http://www.poetrysociety.or....

Poets of color can also meet with likeminded folks at Kundiman, Cave Canem, Macondo and other programs who give priority to diasporic writers.

I've attended CantoMundo, VONA and the Bay Area's Intergenerational Writers Lab and have benefited highly from the experience.

Re: LA Might Not Have The New Yorker, But At Least We're Not Pretentious: Spotlight on Local Lit Mags

Palabra: A Magazine of Chicano & Latino Literary Art definitely comes to mind. http://www.palabralitmag.co...

Re: Post Fires Editor Who Was Critical Of Racist Cartoon - mediabistro.com: FishbowlNY

Just when you think the Post can't dig itself deeper under the barrel, it finds a way. Read: I'm not just posting pics and vids of me and my three best poet friends.

One word of warning. Believe it or not, not every author wants their picture and/or video on a public website. A couple of writers have requested I take down their images for personal reasons and I was quick to honor their request and respect their privacy.

Re: Free is wrong for writers; Freemium might not be

Ben, I agree with you that there are more opportunities to be heard in e-world now but I think that blog is the way to go for aspiring writers as it allows you to post full-length reviews, detailed reading information and opens up conversation with potential readers. But that's me and I'm sure each writer, depending on genre, will find the SM app that best serves there need.

Would I discourage using Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, (SM Flavor of the Month)? No.

Would I encourage picking one social media application of choice and directing all of your peripheral SM to that one source? Yes.

Re: Free is wrong for writers; Freemium might not be

Freemium is where it's at for an aspiring poet author.

I've gotten my chapbooks in the hands of good editors, curators and reviewers through a swap exchange–my chapbook for your chapbook, used book, CD, or media item of choice.

As for blogging vs (current social media trend): They are both extensions of the water cooler but I always feel like my own blog is my water cooler where folks come to catch up with me and not the other way around.
