The first driving vacation Vicki and I did was to go to Monument Valley, driving from Sunnyvale CA, to and around the 4 corners, and returning via the Grand Canyon and Reno. The John Gavrilis photograph that has always been above our fireplace mantel was inspiration for the trip.

Re: An American Hero Returns in Thrilling New Series, Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan | Demanders | Roger Ebert

I can see all of the facets unfold just within Episode 1, the Pilot. What was unexpected was the level of gore and violence in the action at the end of the episode. This will not go well with those who are unhappy about the escalating ability to provide realism, even as part of dramatizing the ugliness and terror of modern combat. My wife was disgusted, frightened and nauseated, having to leave the room. It made her weep.

We know and expect this to be an action adventure, but the extreme reality is not suitable for all viewers by any means. This is a lot harsher than TV-MA signals.

Re: Banner Bugfix Attempt 01 | Spanner Wingnut's Muddleware Lab

This comment is simply to confirm that, although I am trouble-shooting this blog site, the Disqus comments are still working.

Re: Tag Plugins

The "slug" is the name given to the file, derived from the title. I'm not thrilled about having to pro-actively look for these. I am also reluctant to impose moderation on all comments. I will soldier on.

Re: Curtain Raiser - Introducing Hexo | Spanner Wingnut's Muddleware Lab

I received the email indicating that this comment requires moderation, and I approved it. You can use your Facebook, Twitter, or Google account to authenticate to Disqus and then be able to comment. Disqus accepts confirmation of any of those accounts as authenticating you and uses your identification from that account as the author of a comment. The pop-up asking for your Facebook, Twitter, or Google log in is actually from those sites, and they inform Disqus that you have authenticate with them (unless you cancel the pop-up instead). However you authenticate, the comment is handled by Disqus.

I prefer to use the Disqus account I created years ago and that I now use as the moderator of comments on Spanner Wingnut).

Re:

Until this moment I did not see what Disqus presents to someone who is not already logged into Disqus. I suspect the offering of the alternative logins is a Disqus feature. I will have to see whether I can control that. My intention was simply to use Disqus. I will have to dig farther into this. Thanks for the feedback, Doug

Re:

This page has been given an introduction that explains that purpose. Also, because the Spanner Wingnut blog is for experimental confirmation before implementing features in "production" blogs of the author, it seemed worthwhile to point out that even this default first post may transform in response to various updates and customizations.

Re: Writing

Have you just tried dragging the file into the drafts subfolder?

You might need to remove the date line in the header. Very nice compilation of the considerations and the nagging problem. I think you've helped me avoid a serious error in attempting a distribution-invisible arrangement for a functional-programming model I tinker with. And I was certainly not disappointed to see Jack Kennedy elected President in 1960, my first opportunity to vote in a federal election.
From that perspective, I found the review touching. Thank you for pointing to the complexity of a life and how being driven to serve or lead does not mean absence of personal demons.
And I certainly agree with the comments about how as we age, there can be more room for empathy and compassion as we realize how much life is showing us ourselves in a mirror.

Re: Apache OpenOffice: Not Dead Yet

A little correction. Andrea Pescetti, the original and now past Chair of the OpenOffice PMC is the Release Manager for the forthcoming Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2. Andrea is giving that his undivided attention. In August, Dennis E. Hamilton (myself, a.k.a. orcmid@apache.org) became Chair-Elect upon Jan Iversen stepping down. At the Apache Software Foundation, the Chair is an Officer of the foundation (in this case, Vice President for OpenOffice) for legal and other reasons. That requires ratification by the Board of Directors and we'll know about that on Wednesday, September 16.
The only other comment I have is with respect to the adversarial situation. Although individuals have whatever their past grievances are, and there are hurts and animosities aplenty, it is not and will never be the position of the ASF that descendants of the openoffice.org code base, or any other products, are regarded as competitors. The ASF is a public-interest foundation that produces software for the public good under its umbrella. It prides itself on acting as a good citizen in the world of software, including but not only the world of open-source software production. Its concern, and one I share, is exclusively on how Apache OpenOffice conducts itself and plays-well with others. I am not interested in any pronouncements about other projects and I am making that well-known as rapidly as I can. Although contributors and adherents have their own positions, and are free to voice them, the thrust of the project is and will be as I have just said. The Apache Code of Conduct applies when folks bring their voice to Apache-supported venues. It's a turbulent world, anyone can get caught up in the drama, and, just the same, tolerance is to be strived for and encouraged.
