Although very cute creatures, the number of accidents caused by them has increasingly become a hazard damaging vehicles; injurying drivers; nearly killing motorcyclists as well as only injurying the deer. The over population of rabbits may be causing proplems but they're not a danger to people driving. If the limit of deers hunted was raised, there would be less along the side of the road causing potential these deer vs driver accidents. If reducing the number of deer were permitted, maybe there would be less pouching. Who or what determines how many deer can be hunted?

Re: The candidates for San Juan County Sheriff: Where they differ, and don’t - Journal of the San Juans

In light of the FH Fire Department Chief Long's reprimand regarding improperly following safety policies and procedures, should Sheriff's candidate, Rob Noe be bragging about the unsafe manner of not handcuffing a prisoner and most likely violating the policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Department?

Policies and Procedures are in place for reasons, and in these cases for safety reasons. If Rob Noe wants to bring Sheriff's Department Policies and Procedures up to State standards, perhaps he should lead by example and comply with the standards that are already in place to keep officers safe right now.

Re: The candidates for San Juan County Sheriff: Where they differ, and don’t - Journal of the San Juans

In light of the FH Fire Department Chief Vern Longs' reprimades over procedures and polices regarding safety, should Rob Noe be bragging about transporting a prisioner without handcuffs? These policies and procedures are set in place for everyone's safety and are nondiscretionary. To allow individual firefighters or deputies to decide for themselves puts themselves and the public at risk.

As leaders in our community, the Fire Chief and the Sheriff need to lead by example. I don't think Rob Noe should consider that a good thing.

Re: Sheriff: Nou is top finisher in primary, second candidate 'too close to call' - Journal of the San Juans

What? Investigations and prosecutions are not the sole responsibility of a Detective. The level of investigations has to be funded. With all the government budget cuts, when people decide what's important in the community, they need to make tough decisions. Law enforcement, which includes investigations into drug activity, or Parks and Rec. Not all drug arrests are not prosectuted, and that's the responsibility of the Prosecutor's Office, which I feel we need to be held more accountable.

Re: Orcas man arrested for pot possession - Islands' Sounder

How about if the Prosecutor start agreeing to prosecute! Why not dismiss the misdemeanor charge for a guily plea to the felony charge? Several of the "punishments" for crimes committed recently have been an outright travesty of justice. A man murders his brother and doesn't get charged for murder? High school boys' sexually assault others in a hazing incident and don't even warrant being charged? Why are crimes committed in this county being ignored and / or minimized by our Prosecutor? If there are no real consequences for our crimes, should we be going to such effort and expense to enforce them? If, ultimately crimes are not prosecuted and there is no harsh punishment, what reason or motivation would one have to stop repeating the crimes?

Re: Frightening experience for islander at border; guns drawn in case of mistaken identity - Journal of the San Juans

Your exactly right "Warfrat". It is really easy to take cheap shots at those you don't know! Like, Mike Greene, I too have notice the many times you've logged your various opinions under the cloak of anonimity. Your harsh and attacking opinons only seem to serve as your personal outlet for being an ass! We probably all know who you are "old timer", so why not introduce yourself if all you want to do is get a reaction. As for the actual topic, I have to agree with Mike Greene. Had the CBP taken a moment to comfirm the details before sending out the troops, everyone could have been spared the drama. Negative retorts asside, inappropriate and racist comments and the over reaction by CBP is appauling.

Re: Beth Hudson: 'I thank the good people of San Juan Island and elsewhere for their prayers' - Journal of the San Juans

Welcome home Beth! It's so nice to have you back on island healing and getting stronger. We look forward to seeing you back at the bookstore with hedgehog and Keith. The very best to you. The dawn, I'm sure is there just for you and the light is what we see in your spirit through all of this.

Re: PeaceHealth contract completed, commission will vote March 18 - Journal of the San Juans

What a great idea, in theory, to have a hospital on the island to serve our community and making it more convenient, by not having to travel back and forth to the mainland for various procedures. It is expensive and inconvenient; absolutely. But, did we all move here believing that things would be more convenient? Do we live here because there are meriad of things to do on the island? Or are we here to change the very place we fell in love moving here? Why is it that the "build a brtidge to the mainland " types move here? Sure it would be nice to have all the wonderful comforts of living here that are provided for on the mainland, but we don't live on the mainland. We live on an island. If so many feel bothered by that which we don't have, they have the option of moving back off the island. A lot of us came to get away from things such as; gangs, higher crime rates, traffic conjestion, etc... We don't need to give up our simplier life here. Nor can we afford to give up our rights as citizens of this small community to the mainland (PeaceHealth). Let's keep control of the discion making in our community and not give it away to PeaceHealth or anyone else. Having the comforts of great medical advances would be great, but at what costs are we willing to do that?

Re: San Juan Island School Board cuts funding for most sports; proposes contract with Island Rec - Journal of the San Juans

When times are tough, we all have to give up something. If giving up a few sports is the worst thing that could happen to our school and our kids, we're doing okay. We should recognize this time as an opportunity to teach our children about how better to manage their money and their time. There are other character building activites out there besides sports. Giving back to a community that gives so much for them, such as the multiude of civic organizations that need volunteers; finding new activities they otherwise wouldn't try; and so on. There is life beyond sports that can build character and instill values. Getting taxpayers pay more or allowing Island's P&R to mismanage more sport activites isn't the way.

Re: Five students disciplined for hazing at Friday Harbor High School - Journal of the San Juans

I think everyone should know and be ashamed at how this was handled. From the School, the parents, the kids, but mostly our Prosecutor who chose not to charge these boys with the crime. Our young sports heros were "teabagging" their incoming team members. "Teabagging" for those who don't know, is the act of placing one's testicles in the face of another. This is a disgusting thing to happen to anyone, and who would volunteer to have this done to themselves? Is it less of a crime because this was done to another boy? What would we all think if this had been done to your child or our daughter?
