I owned a 330CI which is the sporty 3 Series with the biggest balls, short of the M3. The 330CI that I owned was 235 hp, was quick as a whip and handled better than any other car I've drive. And I've driven a new Mercedes, SAAB, Infinite, Passat. Out of them all, the BMW handles the best.

Not to be corny, but they call it the ultimate driving machine for a reason. The car wants to be driven, not just rode around in. As far as your M3 experience goes, maybe your 'friend' didn't take good enough care of his, because BMW owners are typically owners for life.

In my case, I traded mine in for a wife which has turned out to be far from the smartest thing I've ever done.

BTW - a BMW dealer would have never in a million years treated you the way your VW dealer did. At 70 hp, its really not suitable for highway travel or large enough to fit luggage for long distance travel.

The Smartcar has its own niche market.

The quality of a VW sedan may be hard to match (in its class), but the power is easily matched as they really don't have balls on them (200 hp max). Compared to their German cousins, the VW is a mere stepping stone in between raises...
