The "old guard" would react viscerally (and negatively) to this. I can see it now.

But student-led instruction (as it is called at times) does work well in some cases, and I've experienced it personally as a student. I try to incorporate some of these student-led principles into my traditional lecture-style classroom. I don't know how successful I am, really. But I do know that the traditional classroom is ill-suited for today's urban students who are raised using the internet and social media.

Perhaps the greatest obstacle to this sort of freedom would be student discipline. Will students set aside their smartphones and shut down their browsers and get their work done with a fair amount of diligence?
