Yes, he is a mega talent. Graham Rahal said he's not seen anyone faster in an IndyCar with the possible exception of pole position record holder Will Power. He clearly impressed with the McLaren test.

IndyCar is more difficult than F2 (ask Callum Ilott). The cars are more physical, the races are longer, and the competition is tighter.

Herta was 3rd in the championship in 2020. If IndyCar is more difficult than F2, then there is not a skill-based reason to not also award 40 SL points for a top 3 in the championship.

Is it justifiable that the system is biased so that you must go through F2 to get to F1? Sure! But the idea that Herta isn't good enough is absurd.

GT2 - Closer to street. Generally heavier, less downforce, more power. Sprint racing only. Slower in corners and faster on the straights. Theoretically lower running costs due to race length and lack of complex carbon bodywork.

GT3 - Lighter, less power, much more downforce, endurance-durable. Trickier to drive as an Am due to higher cornering speeds and more pitch sensitivity due to the amount of downforce.

Although it probably wasn't necessary, having the program be available to everyone means it's harder to pit factions against one another to take it away.

This is one of the arguments for any universal social program - it belongs to everyone. You can't use means testing to divide opinion, and the discussion of "who deserves it" is avoided.

If you're mad about rich people getting the money, just let it slide and tax it back later.

I think you make a strong point, especially for the Lexus, which is a shame because it is a very good race car. I don't think the RCF has extensive customer support in Europe based on the car counts there.

The Honda is still new (one year for non-Evo, one year for Evo), and there are plenty in GT300, IMSA, and World Challenge America. I think you might see more of those next season.

What's funny is that I thought that the building was actually crumbling when I took the photo. I lack full depth perception when I'm not wearing contacts, which is almost all the time. It wasn't until I walked past this building again yesterday that I realized it was a wall that had been torn down.

And yes, it could apply to the metaphor as well.

Israel has been in Europe since forever. Their soccer federation is part of UEFA and not the AFC (as is Turkey's, oddly enough). We should probably ask people who have been there, but I'm pretty sure that culturally it's more European and less Middle Eastern. Stefanie's stories make it sound like Southern Italy and Greece.

The Founding Fathers analogy was completely pulled out of my ass, but hopefully there is some truth to it.

We could go on forever with this back and forth, but I think we have similar minds on this, the difference being that I am trying to favorably analyze this hipster thing in an effort to make the overall discussion more even-handed.

There are many things I dislike about hipsters. I sometimes worry that the hyperactive appropriation of stuff from recent decades is a lack of creativity, and that this is something that is happening in our whole generation.

I do think that hipsters are a good magnifying glass for the current state of things, and that they are an untapped subject of analysis for sociologists and the like.

I didn't say all hipsters were smart; I think a lot of them are idiots. But following is still a conscious decision, and still involves a value judgement. If someone devotes effort to imitating hipsters, then somewhere in their head they are saying, "I like this, so I will do it." They might be less creative, but it's still an individual decision.

As for "not doing anything about it": they at least have considered it, and thus are more likely to change their behavior in the future. That's a little progress, and I'll take it.

I'm aware that the Perfect Form of the Hipster does not apply to many, but in a historical sense people only remember the general tendencies of a movement and not specific instances of disparity. No one talks about the Founding Fathers as a bunch of lazy drunkards who didn't want to pay taxes, and so piggybacked on the revolution. There were probably a lot of those. There has to be some reduction in specificity to facilitate evaluation (or maybe we're doing it wrong and we should go back and be more specific). The fact that this is happening now and one can see all the imperfections warps judgement.

You're right that the description doesn't fit many, and I probably got careless with that sweeping generalization. But, as a whole, isn't this subculture the source of many of those things? And even if you don't like, say, M.I.A., you have to admit that what she made is different from most things that came before her.

The technology statement I should clarify: they're usually not the people creating new technology, but they are certainly early adopters and have an influence on how the technology ultimately ends up being used.
