I've been thinking about this issue for some time. Time and again, I refer people to the lost 'R' in CRM. Customer Relationship management devolved to Customer Records Management. Why? Rhetorically, because it's easier to manage data than relationships, for one. I think there's a lot of white space to be explored here, lots of opportunities to regain the 'R' in CRM, craft better customer experiences that drive long term customer engagements.

Re: Incredible Macro Photos of Insects with Drops of Water On Their Heads

Oddly fascinating shots. Equally important, I think is your overlay analysis of how web 2.0 breaks this model. It also reflects an outmoded philosophy of marketing, which unfortunately, is still followed by to many enterprise vendors.

Re: Building IS Strategy

This serves as not only a great reminder, but also a warning to many organizations as we move into a new decade. There are probably two or three hurdles that are preventing cloud adoption at larger enterprises. These include:

1. Regulatory compliance for public companies.
2. As Niels points out in his comment, the inherent complexity of Financials is another factor that may slow down the migration to SOC. The most successful SaaS technologies, to date, have been ones that fall closer to the standardized processes side of the complexity curve.
3. Because of these complexities, migrating off of an on-premise solution will be extremely painful. Such a migration, I believe, will only happen if companies see significant, long term cost benefits in doing so. The big on-premise vendors, SAP & Oracle, are certainly increasing the pain with exorbitant maintenance fees.

Nonetheless, there is enough inertia behind enterprise SOC, that we're bound to see it sooner than later for Financials.

Re: What I’ll miss about Google Notebook? Speed and Search.

I've got to agree with you, Google Notebook had so much potential, but like so many projects inside Google, it never received the attention it deserved. I think UberNote will have the same long term implications as some of the other providers, that is, it will eventually go away. Zoho's products are all good, but none of them are great. Your points about search and tagging are spot on.

I hope, but doubt, that Google will release Notebook in open source format so developers can continue to build on a solid platform.

In the meantime, I'm using a combination of Diigo (for bookmarking, quick notes), Evernote (for fast capture), and Google Sites (for more complex coordination of notes). None of these really integrate, but they are all fast, and offer a certain degree of flexibility.

Zotero would be an excellent solution, but for some reason I can't quite get version 1.5 to run on my Firefox.

Re: Endnote’s suit against Zotero headed to a courtroom

This is unfortunate. I too can't tell if there were actual violations of proprietary technology, but I also find Zotero to be quite good. I suspect there are many open source projects that could/would run into the same type of violations. It's sad to see TR spend resources on this and not on expanding and improving their own product.

Re: Disqus 2.0 WordPress plugin broken?

Oops, now getting an import error.

Re: Disqus 2.0 WordPress plugin broken?

Working now! I'm sure that accounts for a lot of the YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace phenomena. Of course the outlier here is TechCrunch, which I doubt the AOL nomads have ever heard of.

Re: Disqus 2.0 WordPress plugin broken?

I'm getting the same 'Disqus is in legacy mode" right after installing and Activating the plugin.
