Allowing a child molester to hang around your young girls is probably not a good idea. Even the mildest forms of indecent liberties (exposing yourself to a child or saying lewd things) should make you question this man's character. I'm no law expert, but I think a judge would say that you're providing an unsafe environment, and the kids wouldn't be allowed to visit your house or be in contact with your boyfriend. You'd be able to visit with your girls, just in a public place. Or, it could just depend on the severity of his "indecent liberties."

Re: Would You Date a Prison Inmate?

Hi Tasha. You only "mess around" with this man? There's no meaningful relationship? So how are you going to mess around when he's in prison? It seems like there would have to be a deeper connection to justify your efforts.

Re: Would You Date a Prison Inmate?

Hi Karen. Your boyfriend pointed a gun at you? In front of your child? That's awful! And all of a sudden he wants to get married now that he's incarcerated? How do you know he won't become violent again?

Re: Would You Date a Prison Inmate?

Hi Brittany. Well, if he gets out of jail in two years, you have a great shot at a relationship - assuming the warm feelings are still there after he's released. But if you have to wait 22 years? Yikes! You may want to consider seeing other people. It'll be a pretty lonely life for you having a romantic relationship through protective glass for the next several years.

Re: Meet Lifescript’s Newest Guest Blogger: Norine Dworkin-McDaniel!

Hi Norine! I'm a naturally skinny "jerk," and I never know what to say when people comment on my skinniness. I usually mumble something about how green tea speeds up my metabolism (which I declare my secret weapon), and now I realize that my "well-intentioned advice" just makes me look like an even bigger jerk.

Thanks for pointing out to me my ridiculousness. I'll have to think of a less annoying response.

Re: Would You Date a Prison Inmate?

Hi Patrick. Thanks for posting. I'm sorry if I offended you - I didn't mean to imply that everyone who dates inmates MUST have low self-esteem. I'm glad you're happy with your partner and the conditions of your relationship. How often do you see her?

Re: Would You Date a Prison Inmate?

Hi Sue! That's a good point you make about getting to know someone without having the "physical stuff" get in the way. Good luck - hope you two are able to make it work after he's transferred. That's a good one! I bet your co-worker was scouring the Internet - looking for the big breaking story in Pisa - for at least 5 minutes. But nothing beats sibling companionship, I'm sure. How wonderful that your kids debate and know so much about each other. They're lucky that you instilled that in them. Dinnertime is also a good time for you and the hubby to catch up on each other's events!

Re: Why You Should Drop Everything to Have Family Dinners

Wow - what an important post, Laurie! I had family dinners growing up (only-child style: mom, dad, plus me), and keeping up with my parents' conversation definitely helped impart yapping and debating skills. It seemed like a drag at the time (dinner was always a looong affair); I was so jealous of my friends who could just grab a plate of food and run back to the TV. I used to love spending dinnertime elsewhere just to enjoy the grab-and-go style of dinner. But my pals loved coming over to my house for the dinner table event. Go figure.

Re: Would You Date a Prison Inmate?

Hi Janelle. You're a thoughtful sister-in-law! There are lots of sites out there that connect prisoners to potential friends. Just google "prison penpal." I'm sure your brother-in-law has Internet access behind bars (in a common space). He can reach out directly to would-be penpals.

Re: Would You Date a Sex Offender?

Thanks for telling your story, Mony. Maybe your mom is lonely for companionship, and that's why she chose to keep this man in her life. You said you've already tried discussing this with her, and that's not working. I'm not sure if there's anything more you can do, other than keeping a close watch on his behavior and how he interacts with the kids in your family.

Re: Would You Date a Prison Inmate?

Action speaks louder than words, Ivette. There's no way to tell if he really loves you while he's still in prison. The crime a person commits says a lot about their character and whether he's deserving of a significant other's trust. What is your boyfriend in prison for?

Re: Would You Date a Prison Inmate?

Hi Waitin4Chris! Thanks for posting. "For better or worse" is what you promise when you get married, but if your partner isn't holding up his end of the bargain - caring for you and the family you've created - then why should you feel obligated to stick around? ...Are you married? You called him your "boyfriend."

And it's terrible that he's serving time for a crime he didn't commit. But then you stated, "everyone is human and makes mistakes." Does that mean you're not sure if he's innocent of the crime in question?

Re: A ‘Delicious’ Healthy Snack? Like you said, having a combination of friend-types is key. (Although I think I've gotten pretty good at sniffing out the "thongs" early on; as a result, I don't invest any time with them - just a quick "hello." Who needs them?) I have a few "athletic bras" in my life, and I'm so grateful for them - these are the friends I cherish most.

Re: A ‘Delicious’ Healthy Snack? Chocolate - in liquid or solid form - is a must-have after-dinner treat. Hot chocolate is best enjoyed in winter weather - it seems weird to drink one when it's a balmy 80 degrees outside!

But these mousse cups won't disappoint - no matter the weather or what time of day you eat 'em.
