That said your initial points are correct, but the overall point is simply false. Google employes a number of people in the Seattle area and that means more jobs, more tax money, more opportunities for Seattle to improve the city transit and roads. That said both the city and the tech industry have been taking measures to reduce the number of SOV in Seattle (company sponsored ride share, company funded shuttle service, vsnpools, orca passes, etc). I have first hand experience with this as Facebook prepares to move into our new office. That said the traffic will be worse before it's better (via alternative transportation). But to say Google has nothing to offer the local community is simply a false an uninformed statement.

Re: Revealed: First look at Google’s plan for new Seattle building near Amazon’s HQ

Hey Geekwire, unlike Aussie here, I actually appreciated this article. With so many buildings going up and tech companies expanding in Seattle it's become an important aspect of the news here. I am particularly interested in its impact on traffic and downtown condo and apartment market on the con side, and interested in the impact on local businesses and lunch spots. It is a net positive on the local startup industry as well.

Re: Seattle drivers really are terrible, study confirms

I wonder if this is die to the growing number of folks from out of state (chiefly from the Bay Area) moving to Seattle more so than long term native residence.

Re: Guestbook — Nick & Megan's Wedding

This is a test :)

Re: Should AIGA Certify Designers?

I work in the field of interaction design, information architecture, content strategy, and user research (loosely described as the field of User Experience design). We had a private organization offer certification (for a price) called HFI.

I get asked all the time as a hiring manager if the HFI certification is worth the expense to get it. I often answer, "It depends on who is interviewing and hiring you." To me, personally, it adds up to words on a page. A portfolio of work and demonstrated understanding of the craft that comes out in the interview process speak far louder than words on a page.

Would it be any different if a reputable membership association had its own certification program? No, it provides no additional credibility. Would a collage degree and those words on paper matter? Depends on the collage, the program, and largely the instructors.

I only ask that if AIGA is seriously considering offering this, equal consideration should be made on the impact this decision would have on the design community at large.

Re: Geek of the Week: Dr. Jim Olson’s ‘Project Violet’ is crowdfunding potential cures for cancer

Great choice for Geek Of The Week. I can't think of someone more deserving. Of course, I'm a bit biased as a proud supporter of Project Violet. I encourage you all to be biased with me. :)

Re: The next Silicon Valley? How would you be able to get that data? I think qualitative based assessment would be way better than quantitative for sure. I just have no idea how GeekWire could get those numbers.

Re: The next Silicon Valley? Its interesting to see the playing field as a whole. I wonder tho, the cost of living (COL) is quite higher in NY than it is in, say, Seattle. ;) This means 1M in Seattle will go much further than 1M in NYC. What would this graph read like if the COL was factored in? Maybe a follow up post is in order if there is anything interesting that comes out of that refactoring.

Re: Geek of the Week: Rasmus Rasmussen returns to his first love, making games

Ras is one of the most creative guys I have ever met. It won't be two conjoined bio-dome says sources inside of Amazon who attended the recent all-hands meeting. The structure will, however, have a large glass roof.

Re: The User Experience of Wine - UXmas - Wishing you a great experience through the festive season!

Thanks for all of the great comments everyone. I walk to work every day down a bike/pedestrian trail. It gets a lot of use, I am guessing probably over 20 people wait at a particular light every day. Unbeknownst to them there is a great bike shop right off the trail.

Why don't they know about it? Because the sign faces the wrong way and doesn't communicate what it is the shop does even if they did see it. It's a logo with the company name but the name itself isn't the most intuitive thing unless your familiar with the company.

They are losing about 20 eyeballs a day every 15 minutes during rush hour at the very least. Marketing is about being on the potential customer's mind at the time your services is needed.

Re: Kristina finished her book!

Congrats Kristina!
