Anything that serves as a mediator in worship is an idol ... I always go back to God's instruction not to use tools and handiwork on the altar ... the altar was for God's glory alone. I wonder how many performance oriented churches might be risking God's exclusive right to glory in exchange for being remarkable?

Re: IT’S ALL IN THE NAME.

That was brilliant ... you are on a roll my friend!

Re: 20 weeks, 1 day

Your bravery in writing this alone is incredible. Me and Heidi are praying for you both. We know that your faith in God and your determination to love him in good and bad is itself an incredible witness. Love ya man.

Re: Self-Righteousness = Making much of us, making much of Jesus.

Preach it bro. I've gone back and forth on how emphatic the gospel should be in our witness. I love the idea of "using words when necessary" but in my opinion, folks who soft peddle Christ are either not completely convinced of his sovereingty or they simply scared of offending. If any of us thinks that "the world" is going to wake up one day and say "oh, you're right, we do live in a sinful, selfish, depraved world, and we're so glad that you made us realize that everything we value is rubbish, please come and teach your faith in our schools and take over our government" we are complete fools. We are at war ... we can and should be respectful, but there's just no getting around the fact that we are called to call people to repentence. Our right actions help our case, but we must still make our case.

Re: Wise…. For me, most of my online connections have roots in the "real world" for want of a better phrase. I do think online friendships are real and genuine, and to the extent that rudeness and selfishness etc can be displayed online, they can fall prey to the same shortcomings of our regular, walking-around lives.

I think my online friendships at base add value to my life by broadening my horizons, adding to my ideas, offering the potential for mutual help when in need and generally enriching life. We're all still relatively new cultivating social media friendships, but I'm pretty sure they'll matchup pretty well with friendships IRL when all the shiny talk about tools subsides and we focus on what we do with them.

Re: Soak in the marinade of this quote

SMACK DOWN. Calvin was a fighter wasn't he? No pale-faced saint hovering above the messiness of life in abstractions, but someone battling Satan in the trenches. All of us should pray for his spirit and conviction.

Re: Stop Trying To Fill Your Hole

absolutely killer. Everything we say and do as Christians only hints at the surpassing glory of Christ ... That's the way it is, and I think, meant to be. We can't contain God. Or express Him. That's who Jesus is and nothing, absolutely nothing can take that glory, that right, that power away from Him

Re: Cross The Line 5

Brad: I'm sure you've got tons of stories about the how the students used that free gift to multiply the witness of Christ to multitudes ... just thought I'd drop this one for you: One of my students got together with several others who weren't even in attendance that night, pooled their money and decided to give it the family of one of their high school friends who was evicted .... Making disciples. That's what it's all about.
