The VIXIA HF G10 boasts Canon's HD CMOS Pro
Image Sensor which provides outstanding video resolution, superb
low-light performance, and a wide dynamic range. The HFS200 doesn't indicate the number of iris blades, so it could be as few as four (like the HV20 family). Eight blades is good, if you have a large enough chip to reduce DOF. But a 1/3" chip doesn't give you much background blur, and... sometimes that's a good thing, and sometimes it's not.

The "Pro" chip might be better in some way, but the only spec that demonstrates sensitivity is "minimum illumination":

HF S200: 0.3 lx (Low Light mode)

HF G10: Auto mode 1.5 lux (with auto slow shutter selected - shutter speed 1/30)
Low Light mode: 0.1 lux (shutter speed 1/2 sec.)

So the G10 may have a 3:1 low light sensitivity advantage *if* those numbers are accurate. Remember a single stop is 1.4:1, two stops are 2.0:1, and 2.8:1 is three stops, so 3:1 is quite a bit when you're in low light. Again, we don't know if these numbers are real without an apples-apples comparison and if someone's just saying "I can still see an image in the noise at 0.1 lux," that's not much of a benchmark.

As always YMMV. Test them at the store and see if you like the button placement. That's my biggest gripe with small cameras.

Re: http://blog.mikeambs.com/post/10668917692

I would think the more expensive unit is just older (when 2 MP was good), or MAYBE it has better optics, since the imaging chip is almost the same size (1/3" vs. 1/2.6") and the built-in flash drive (32GB) can't add that much cost (although years ago it did), and everything else looks roughly equal. As you know, glass gets real expensive when they try to get it perfect. But my first impression is it's just an older model and carries the price when those specs were more in-line with what early adopters would pay.

Re: http://blog.ftomfilm.com/post/6779169431

This should have never been called Final Cut Pro. As was the case with Final Cut Express, FCP version 10 is a different program and should bear a different name. Call it Final Cut Advanced, or Final Cut 64, or something, but not Final Cut Pro.

Re: http://blog.ftomfilm.com/post/3974935217

Go team FToM!

I'm känfədənt you can do it

Re: http://blog.mikeambs.com/post/3398154087

You can't HDR an image with any movement of either subject or camera using standard HDR techniques. HDR relies on the superposition of the images and they must be aligned. I have an idea of how to do it, but it needs to be hashed out.

There are video cameras with good dynamic range, such as the Sony CineAlta F23 with 11-12 stops of latitude, and that camera has been out quite a while, so I assume there are even better ones now. The Red camera has only about 10 stops, and your average prosumer camera about 7-8. Film is about 14 stops (Kodak 5219 on Arricam ST), which is as good as the average eyeball.

I'll point out that every day sensor dynamic range does seem to get better, so maybe in 10 or 20 years, this whole discussion may be moot.

Re: http://blog.ftomfilm.com/post/717599045

How cool is that!???

Re: http://blog.ftomfilm.com/post/3129727436

Inaction is often the result of worrying about things beyond your immediate control. If an event is too far in the future, or even as little as twenty minutes from now, you have so little control that dwelling on it can only lead to apprehension, doubt, and mental gridlock.

Action is what you can do in the next fifteen minutes. If you focus on the present, you maintain forward momentum. Hedge any future concerns with less rigor, and less specificity, since so much can, and will, change.

When you find the balance between these, you'll appreciate Dwight Eisenhower's quote: "In preparing for battle, I have always found that plans are useless -- but planning is indispensable."

Re: http://blog.ftomfilm.com/post/3002040840

NEX-3 is also a good camera, but only does 720P

Re: http://blog.ftomfilm.com/post/3002040840

Take a look at the Sony NEX-5 also. My retired cinematographer friend has one and raves about it. One nice thing about going to a narrower body camera, is they can use lenses from other cameras with an adapter. Example, I use manual focus Zeiss ZF glass made for Nikon mounts on my Canon EOS camera (which is 2.5 mm slimmer). There are tons of old Canon FD lenses out there, which EOS cameras can't use, but a slimmer body like the NEX can. It's all about the flange to focal plane distance - you can always add an adapter to make up the difference if the body is shorter.

Re: A Straight Line

That quote comes from Lars' doc film class.
