Yes, you can run whatever operating system you want on it, the reason you get XP Home is because Microsoft sells it on the cheap to the netbook manufacturers and then add a bunch of restricitions such as a 160GB hard drive and 1GB of memory.
2. It should do in just about every application and it's the easiest upgrade that most people perform on their netbooks.
3. No, not really as netbooks are limited to running the memory at a fairly low speed compared to more "modern" platforms. Besides, these days the quality of DDR2 computer memory is pretty even between the manufacturers.
4. That depends what you want. The Nvidia ION platform is coming which offers vastly superior graphics performance, but it's not certain when this actually is the case, but you might have to wait until Windows 7 launches in October and then you'll have to expect to pay close to twice that of what you paid for the 1005HA and most likely get worse battery life. Take into consideration what it is you're going to use your netbook for and then go from there.

Re: The end of the Atom netbook is nigh?

Well, Tegra has its place, but it's not going to be Linux for now, but rather Windows CE.
It shouldn't be impossible to port Linux to Tegra, but Nvidia doesn't seem to be interested.
On the other hand, they are working on Android, but it's taking some time due to the way Android works, but hopefully we'll start seeing Tegra devices with Android early next year.

Re: Netbooknews.com Vodcast #02, 2009

We'll add the make, model and pricing into the videos when we do things like this in the future, but it doesn't seem like we can do clickable links right now.

Re: Lenovo adds VIA Nano powered IdeaPad S12

It depends what you want to do, but take into consideration that the ION chipset has the advantage of being able to offload the CPU for a lot of video related tasks, as long as you're using compatible software.
As I don't know which chipset the S12 comes with in the VIA Nano SKU, it's hard to say how good it'll be, but VIA has been lagging behind a little bit on the graphics side.
As we haven't had a chance to test either system it's hard to say, but if you intend to watch HD video (720p or above), then the ION model is most likely going to be worth waiting for.
I just saw that there's a way to get a discount on the Atom and Nano versions, so the VIA based one is under $400with free shipping http://portablemonkey.com/a...
The ION version is likely to be a lot more expensive, with rumours suggesting as much as $600, which doesn't really seem worth it compared to what a normal 12-inch notebook costs.
Also, check out the Samsung N510 which is about to launch, as it's also ION based, but with a slightly higher resolution 11.6-inch display.

Re: Netbooknews.com Vodcast #02, 2009

Strange, it's not something we've noticed or had any complaints about.
What system are you watching them on and does it happen when you watch them on YouTube as well?

Re: Netbooknews.com Vodcast #02, 2009

Hi Johnny,

Thanks for your feedback.

We'll take what you said into consideration for sure, just remember that we're a new site and a new team, so it takes a little bit time to get everything perfect.

There are some very good ideas there and we'll see what we can improve upon until next time ;-)

I'll take a look at adding some links on YouTube, at least to the manufacturers that have English websites.

Cheers

Re: Lenovo IdeaPad S12 with ION delayed until October

Well, whatever category it ends up in, it's going to be more expensive. It's a very low power IGP (integrated graphics processor) and as such it makes sense for what Intel is trying to do. Sadly though, Intel hasn't really spent too much time trying to produce sensible Windows drivers for this IGP, although maybe in another couple of releases we'll see some overall better performance. However, the reported improvements of this version seems to be almost good enough.
