I really did think about posting this one myself, but I just didn't find the time to sit down and write one up this week.

Oddly enough, this is one of the few Patty Griffin songs that my wife finds unpalatable. I just find it quirky, odd, and oddly fun.

The copywrite on the song is 1978 Wynwood Music/Southern Melody Publishing Co. (BMI)

Sorry for the hijacking...

But... I do agree with my wife that Flaming Red is actually one of my favorite Patty albums. I can see your point about production driving the song versus the other way around... although I don't really think that's what's happening here. I think Patty had to take a different step with this album just to show she was capable of producing a more varied sound than what she showed on Ghosts... which was essentially a demos record. Maybe that pushed her to try a few unnecessary things in the studio in places, but I still love this album and find it to be an important piece in her evolution.

Nelson would like to make it clear that the following comment comes from his wife and not him:

I absolutely agree that this is an amazing song, but I disagree with the strategy of bashing the album as a whole to emphasize the quality of the song itself. The album goes off the rails a little bit during the second half, but the first half of Flaming Red is outstanding, IMO. Sure, it's produced, and quite a change from Living With Ghosts, but that's not a bad thing -- and that's coming from someone who absolutely loves her debut. I love that Patty chose to change things up here and show how versatile (and rockin') she can be.

For an extra treat, seek out the version of this song that she did with Natalie Maines for Willie Nelson's "Songs for Tsunami Relief" album.

Not a chore really... just more time than I would normally invest in three songs on a blog. This post will take up a good portion of your day.

My favorite part of any of these three songs may just be the fact that Al fully expected to open his hotel room door to find a "big fat hermaphrodite with a Flock of Seagulls haircut and only one nostril" waiting for him on the other side. Albuquerque must be one strange town.

This song seems nice enough... but "nice" isn't what I need from Sarah. I need her to bring a little fire. Give me "Same Old 45" from Silver City over this any day.

I'll still check out the new album and hope it still has a few rough edges. Have you heard the whole thing or just this one track?

I would love to hear some of Gaffney's earlier work, but I have never come across it. I'm getting a bit of an introduction to it now through the tribute album that I've been spinning lately. I'd love to hear some of the original stuff though.

I got two messages from box.net yesterday saying they had requests to remove songs from The Black Kids and The Ting Tings. I thought that was the end of it since the same thing happened to my Gram Parsons birthday post last month and the post was allowed to stay once the file had been removed.

Today, however, I received two emails (another came after my update) telling me my Top 5 Guilty Pleasures post containing the two songs box had already removed... was also being removed. By the time I got the email, the post was already gone. It was there when I started writing the Weird Al post... 30 minutes later... nothing.

Wow...

I come home from a Steeldrivers concert/high school reunion in my hometown and find this. I'm speechless.

I'm staying with my parents this weekend after coming in for the Steeldrivers show, and I showed this post to my mom. I still don't think she really understands what it is that we're all doing here on "the internets," but I think you just helped to validate it a little in her eyes.
