My problem is with the term, in much the same way as I have a problem with "web 2.0" as a term. It's meaningless bandwagonism but, as you infer, you have to go through this annoying part of the hype cycle to get to the good stuff.

What is this "reality" we're augmenting anyway and how would we know? Where do we draw the line? Is music Augmented Reality? Is the smell of bread in a supermarket another example? What about eating?

This all reminds me of an ongoing discussion with the Pagan community about nature. What is natural? I argue that everything that is possible is natural.

I suspect, instead of AR, we really mean Perception Experiences or something similarly buzz-wordy. I love the idea of being able to layer different worlds on top of the physical one, perceivable only through technological lenses. You should read Rainbow's End by Vernor Vinge if you haven't already. It takes your Robocop analogy off for a whirlwind romance and leaves it looking flushed.

Glyph-based AR (the Flash stuff you mention) is admittedly lame in practice but does illustrate the potential I think. The real juice though has to be glyphless AR. A good example of what might be possible with that at some point soon is Project Natal for the xbox 360. The Wii but one stage further: no controllers at all. Just your voice, motion control and pretty advanced face recognition. All you need then are a variety of technological breakthroughs:

- portable lense that doesn't make you look like a twat
- better GPS or alternative location sensing technology... could be wimax triangulation maybe, or something less centralised like LPS (just made that up... Local Positioning System)
- portable sensor array that picks up voice and gestural commands
- long lasting portable power

So not much further to go before it's pretty impressive ;)

Re: The purchase funnel is no more

First!

Gah.
