A remark: NXT should be non-Bitcoin in both the blockchain and currency quadrant. It is a new implementation of a blockchain with its own currency. Completely independent of BTC.

There are alternatives to Bitcoin, if power usage is your concern. Take for example cryptocurrency NXT. It uses proof-of-stake, instead of the power conuming proof-of-work. A few solar powered servers will keep the NXT network running, if your doom scenario unfolds.

Cryptocurrencies will not necessarily take over the world, but it will offer a reliable alternative, globally.

Je hoeft je bitcoins niet voor geld te verkopen; je kunt je bitcoins gewoon uitgeven voor datgene wat je nodig hebt. Als bitcoins gaan rouleren in de economie, wordt de in- en uitstroom relatief kleiner en zal de waarde ook minder schommelen.

Indeed, Napster distributed content peer-to-peer, but held a central server with indexes of content matched to residing IP. Then the client would connect to that IP to request the content.

That's kind of a hybrid model.

It was easy to bring down by seizing the central server, rendering the service useless.

This is easy journalism: catchy title, slightly incorrect comparison, no real conclusion. Zero value added.

Hi Smalls,

the problem with barter is that match-making is harder. A currency is the lubricant for barter. Barter is therefore not a realistic option.

We currently have 2 currency options: an inflationary fiat or a deflationary crypto-currency.

Now what would you prefer, a store of value that deprecates over time, or a store of value that appreciates over time?

I know we're not there yet with the current price swings, but I have more confidence in the latter.

Bitcoin's problem is its fluctuating value: will it be a reliable store of value, in between trades? Holding bitcoins currently exposes you to unpredictable price swings. If this does not change, most people will not feel comfortable with holding bitcoins.

The belief many economists hold, that inflation is needed for economic growth has been disputed for years. I've found many answers in "The paper money collapse". See also http://detlevschlichter.com...

I would consider it wise to buy (a fraction of) a bitcoin to experience how it works. You know, for science. Especially if you write opinionated articles about it.

As long as you add a single line to your article "The author owns bitcoins", I see no conflict of interest.

And seriously, your third point is a crime against logic. So if you were to buy a bitcoin, you would suddenly change your argument? Of course not. You would still prefer M-Pesa, but would be better informed by the experience of actually using bitcoins before writing about it.

Your argument - although being a bit long - for M-Pesa over Bitcoin might hold: Safaricom currently has the unfair advantage of an existing mobile network, an extensive network of agents and a regulatory compliant infrastructure.

Until the old refitted wagon wheel turns out to be rotten from the inside; the faith of all inflationary currencies is to eventually render worthless. The lack of a central institution tinkering with interest to control the value is a virtue.

My stand on this is simple. Bitcoin is new. Never before in human history was it possible to move value over the world this fast, for free, without an intermediary.
Therefore nobody can claim expertise on how Bitcoin will play out. We can only hypothesise and see what will happen.

My bet is on the disruptive side. I believe the force of this open technology will change the financial world as we know it.
But hey, I'm not an expert. Though I will work hard to make it happen!

You listed the differences:
1. M-Pesa works with existing national currencies, making it far simpler to withdraw and spend.
2. M-Pesa is controlled by Vodafone, whereas Bitcoin is an open technology.

The big downsides for M-Pesa of difference 1 and 2 are:
* M-Pesa will only work within countries or within the network of a provider
* Building on top of M-Pesa is just as hard as building on top of the current banking system

The reason M-Pesa is successful: Safaricom (Vodafone) has a near monopoly on mobile networks in the region as well as on "consumer banking". Normal banks only have branches in the major cities.

Bitcoin (the protocol) can overcome both downsides: it is border-less and open for innovation to anyone.

True, adoption is key. And if bitcoins (the currency) will be used by the users remains to be seen. But, Bitcoin is the fastest, free, open solution to transport value between users and networks.

Het onderschrift van deze grafiek klopt niet. Marktkapitalisatie is de koers maal het aantal bitcoins in omloop.

Het aantal BTC bedraagt nu 10.9 miljoen. Dit aantal stijgt met ongeveer 3600 BTC per dag. Dit wordt elke 4 jaar gehalveerd. Uiteindelijk zullen er ruim 21 miljoen bitcoins in omloop komen. 99% van dat aantal zal in 2031 bereikt zijn.

Wellicht is het interessant om de koers vanaf januari 2011 tot nu te tonen, zodat de hype uit dat jaar ook zichtbaar is. Bijvoorbeeld:

I live in The Netherlands (Holland) and only marijuana has been legalized. You can get it on subscription from a doctor only if you have an indication, like chronic pain. Most people will buy from a "coffee shop".
Hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin are very much illegal to posses or sell.

Drug use tends to be lower here than in surrounding countries where it is still illegal to smoke weed. French and UK tourists travel to Amsterdam for a weekend of smoking pot.

Only occasionally I hear friends about having smoked a joint or eaten space cake. It's less common than normal smoking (which is in decline also) or alcohol use. And off course it depends on your peer group.

To be honest marijuana has only been half legalized. You can posses a limited amount, you can sell a limited amount. But you can not grow more than something like 3 plants. Which renders the supply to coffee shops illegal. A very strange situation.

Personally, I'm very much in favor of legalization. It prevents organized crime. There will always be a need to address abuse of marijuana. Just as with alcohol and cigarettes. Combine the legal sale of weed with an excise duty (~value added tax) and we all could benefit from it.

A large reason for people to oppose legalization is the type of tourists it attracts to our cities. And the subsequent trafficking of weed to surrounding countries.
Best would be if all of Europe would allow the *limited use* of marijuana. Just as with alcohol.

Be careful though, with setting the "x" and "_x" outside the constructor (__init__). You're implicitly setting these values on the class, not on the instance.

Example:

Always set object attributes in the __init__:
