The few folk who tirelessly serve behind the scenes need to be acknowledged. They are Jacqui K and Jennifer T who cook each week and have done since Matt’s started. There’s also Deb M who helps clean, serve, wash up, etc each week, and others like Ian S and others who help out each week to make it run smoothly.

Re: Our Housing Crisis Day 15

Thanks for the comment Crisismaven! Will go have a look at your own blog.

If you read further you'll see that I spend time helping the homeless and disadvantaged so my own experiences are often tinged with understanding that it happens to many others.

I decided to document the issue as many folk do not realise the housing situation. I guess that Swags for the Homeless hasn't sought or been given the same media attention that Street Swags have. Hence, my ignorance.

Secondly, while what you say may be true, I can attest that I have seen tears and been given heartfelt hugs with the many Street Swags I have given out. In fact tonight I met with one guy that I had given one to several months ago. He thanked me and said that it had helped ease winter and given him some comfort. Now that he had gotten himself on better footing, he had given the Street Swag I had given him to another to use. So, my point is, that Street Swags have and do make a difference, despite the errors you cite.

I do take exception for your comments about responsibility for my blog. I take responsibility for everything I post and did not post this article or the subsequent ones without seeing and testing the street swags.

Yes the Bible stands up for truth, and if you can show me where there are lies in this post them please do so. I have been protecting and serving the needy, the homeless etc and believed that Street Swags were one part of this, not the be all and end all.

Tell me ,what you are doing that is meeting the same challenge?

Re: When compassion bites.

Thanks Hilmi, appreciate the comment and honesty. I came across your post from a Google search for homelessness and Melbourne that does a weekly search for me, and I have been impressed by your own observations and comments. I trust Melbourne will be safe for you while you are in our city to study.

Re: The Last Chance Motel — Four Corners Report

So, while some grow rich, others must suffer?

Re: God’s Plan for You

Great post Jim. I was just having this discussion with Mark Horvath who is making a doco called Invisible People in USAmerica. We agreed that homelessness, while similar, has been defined and may even be seen in a different way in each country.

As far as you disagreeing about my view that agencies and social workers would see people as more than just boxes - I take and value your opinion and say that I am more than pleased to hear that! However, in my experience with the homeless and folk struggling who are all dealing with the agencies in our area, that is one of the most common complaints and my personal observations from my advocacy work. And while it may be a stretch to be so general - to which I apologise - unfortunately you guys sound like an exception and not the norm.

Funding is a key issue - and yes numbers talk, and that with the rhetoric of helping the homeless by the current Government.

Thanks again for your support and comments - would love to have you contribute more! Shalom!

Re: Australian Centre for the Moving Image

LOL - when I studied my BA in Film making many years ago we watched some of Soldiers of the Cross in History of Cinema. Sad to say it is not limited to the AOG or Australian Christian Church but a other denominations - near where I live is Cafeforce (Churches of Christ) that seem to have gone this way. Not sure about CityLife in Wantirna and other places, but it seems while some have headed that way others haven't - congregation by congregation there seems to be some major differences in this area.

In the USA, the megachurches are growing - from osmosis - that is absorbing members from other churches, while the smaller ones, trying the "big guys" approach are not succeeding very well.

Thanks for dropping by and sharing your thoughts, feel free to drop by and leave them anytime.
