Since then I've always sorted by topic and then by alpha. However, the beauty of the rainbow display has been compelling. I really want to put all my books into an online system so I can find things by lots of criteria and then find them in a pretty display.... <3

Re: Review: Becoming a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) with NOLS

Thanks for this great review! I'm taking the WFR in sausalito next week, so I truly appreciated the review. I had debated taking it in a wilderness location, but ultimately decided that sleeping in my own bed was worth the trade, but now I'm not so sure!

Re: The Best Leadership Advice I’ve Ever Gotten

beautiful post kushal! as someone who's debating a travel-cation, this was inspiring :)

Re: Onward and Upward, Vittana!

congrats Kushal. The key is really eating in your time zone more than *sleeping* in your new time zone. For me, I need to drink water continuously on the flight, but I limit what I eat and it seems to help.

Re: Our startup’s pivot: Three important lessons we learned

Thank you for sharing this -- such an important story about the struggle of building things we love and the challenges of actually building a company. We will have to have a "Seattlites in SF" happy hour for you when you officially get into town.

For me personally, the Seattle Tech Community was awesome -- but the energy in the valley is unbeatable.

Re: How to pretend you’re a startup (Hint: call me when you offer stock options)

Microsoft pitched this "startup" inside concept when I joined them (I didn't believe them - but I wasn't looking for a startup). I think one of the key elements of being at a startup is the instability -- you don't know if you will actually make it, and if you don't things could go POOF. And it is a long arduous crazy adventure to figure out how to make it work. Anytime you have stability -- that's there's no end to the launch pad -- then it probably isn't a startup. Most big companies guarantee things like transfers and replacement jobs if something goes awry, which takes out a lot of the risk. That risk, IMHO, is often what causes people to do extraordinary things -- that change the world.

Great post Jason!

Re: Daryn’s Not So Famous, One Pan Cookie

wow an entire stick of butter in one cookie! looks like fun :)

Re: Time to Say Goodbye to the Cable Guy: Why You’ll Buy TV on the Web in 2012

Interesting -- I'll be curious how that goes. For me, I'm a college hoops fan -- and the options for real-time streaming just don't seem to exist. The best options have been "play by play" (think crosses and knots on a drawn basketball court) that virtually tell you the story of the game. But i want live action!

Re: Time to Say Goodbye to the Cable Guy: Why You’ll Buy TV on the Web in 2012

It sounds sexy, but the glitch for me is live sports coverage. Those deals are often exclusive to cable providers if you want HD and are probably what's going to keep cable alive for quite a bit longer.

Re: Working Backwards

Thanks for this post Werner! We actually called our design hire at my first startup the "Unicorn" hire because it was so hard to fill -- and because we wanted a designer who could code. Understanding the tradeoffs is critical when making that kind of decision -- in our case we chose to leverage marketing for research/persona development and product to answer the "what are we building" questions. It worked for us because we had the culture to support it and talents elsewhere in the organization at the time. Looking forward to more great posts.

Re: Four-Part Series on Lessons Learned on Scaling

Sara -- i'm really excited to read your posts!
