I've actually been blogging about a lot of the ways the government sucks at labeling. This is one piece of it--as I noted in my post.

If you're trying to pull a parallel to basketball: this is like watching the NBA making certain the hoops are the correct size and suggesting the game is fair while allowing players to kick each other in the nuts. It doesn't make for effective entertainment--due to the refs as much as the players.

I would like food to be labeled correctly--I mentioned I'm pro-regulation. Regulation is 100% necessary for a healthy society and economy. I still believe incorrect or misleading labels on food completely defeats the purpose of labeling food in the first place and actually leaves one WORSE off. It allows one to put down one's guard while still being unsafe.

I use the term "the government" rather than "government agency x" because it truly doesn't matter which agency we wish to do the regulation, they're usually going to do a crummy job of it. The issue with the "good people" doing "good work" is that they're completely overloaded--the government takes on much more regulation than they can realistically handle. Rather than cut down the amount of things regulated they use often meaningless or blanket regulation so as to make their jobs easier. Rather than having something be "safe" or "healthy" they'd much rather it not include Substance X because inclusion of Substance X is dangerous. When it turns out instead of Substance X they use just-as-dangerous Substance Y they ban that--they wind up spending more effort creating regulations than regulating. I'd argue that poor regulation is the result of poor governing just as much as poor legislating.

I think that's quite a tangible charge. You pick up an item at the food store and have no idea what's in it--that's very immediate.

Agreed on all other points. I also think our government thoroughly sucks at being immediate enough to regulate industries before they get too powerful and incentivizing good behavior. Good behavior can be much more profitable than bad behavior--if regulation is done correctly. Which it usually is not.

Several opponents, all active in the Tea Parties themselves. Honestly, I think the odds are much higher that this guy was put up by Reid than that he woke up and mysteriously decided to be a TeaBagger one day. It's a fairly common and effective political move.

And I actually quite like a lot of Harry Reid's policies. I just think people who try to split a vote are giant assholes taking advantage of the democratic process.

Actually, the point of the stimulus money was to get it out of the door ASAP. Obama put a 2012 deadline on all stimulus funding for a reason. And yes, we can't prove what unemployment levels would have been--but either could Obama, and that fuckface spent $1 trillion guessing.

Obama himself said the point was to prevent us from getting to ten percent unemployment. At this point unemployment is rising yet the economic situation is improving. Investment is back up. The money will hit the marketplace at exactly the wrong time. It was a botched surgery.

Except it's not making it more affordable. The immediate affordability remains the same. The long term affordability falls--it's just an illusion that turns the student into an indentured servant for longer and longer, making the economic incentives for going to college less and less. By making college more accessible you're actually making it more expensive and less beneficial.
