What you do is use multiple port numbers on your router. The port number on your router does not need to be the same as the port number on your Mac.

So, for example, you could do the following mapping:

4022 on router -> 22 on Mac #1
4023 on router -> 22 on Mac #2

I just chose the numbers 4022 and 4023 at random. You can use anything there.

Re: Blog Post: Briefcase and Remote Access to Home

Hi Joe,

If you've bought the full version of Briefcase, you can just "buy" it again using iTunes. The App Store is smart enough to remember that you own it and you will not be charged again. You should then be able to re-install it.

If both devices are sync'ed to the same computer, it doesn't matter if you have Briefcase on more than one device. If they are sync'ed to different computers, that should be ok as well. You can use the same version of Briefcase on up to 5 computers.

I don't know if this has been helpful. Feel free to email us at support@heymacsoftware.com if you have more questions

Re: Blog Post: Briefcase and Remote Access to Home

Hi Chris,

Your router will establish the address range for your private network. All computers have to be on the same subnet to talk to each other. For example, your router's private IP address might be 192.168.1.1. In that case, all computers on your private network must have private addresses that begin with 192.168.1 (e.g. 192.168.1.2, 192.168.1.3, etc).

It sounds like the static address you are giving to your computer may not be on the subnet that your router is using.

Does that help? If not, let me know!

Re: Blog Post: Briefcase v1.2 Released (Snow Briefcase)

Hi Darryl,

We recently upgraded to libssh2, which supports adding public keys to remote authorized_keys files. So, it should be a pretty easy thing to implement now. I can't make promises, but I am hoping to get it into the next version. Note that you'd still have to log in once with your password to install the public key for Briefcase.

Cheers!

/\/\ike

Re: Blog Post: Briefcase and Remote Access to Home

Hi Edward,

We don't have support for emailing attachments yet. I have some ideas for doing something similar, but it is a tricky problem.

It might be possible to have Briefcase install a helper program on the Mac that automatically opens up a port in the router (success will depend on the type of router and it's configuration). Then, one would need a server that could help your iPhone find your Mac.

It's a tricky problem. Even Apple has had a lot of problems making "Back to my Mac" work reliably.

Re: Blog Post: Briefcase for iPhone Profiled at MacWorld.com

Getting Briefcase to work with Windows is pretty tricky at the moment. The problem is that Windows doesn't support any open standards for remote login. Briefcase works by connecting to a computer and browsing the files. To get it to work on Windows you have to install an open source package.

Some people have had success with Cygwin and SSH for Windows, but the later only works under XP and Cygwin is difficult to set up.

I am currently working on updating Briefcase so that it will work with FreeSSHd, which is much easier to set up and use, and it works on Vista. If you are interested in testing an advance copy, email support@heymacsoftware.com and let us know (I can take a few people if others are interested). I'm hoping to have a testable version by the end of this week.

Re: Blog Post: A funny thing happened on the way to the update

Hi Emil,

A few users have reported that Briefcase is displaying "No WiFi Network" when, in truth, there are just no computers available that it can log into. It is possible for a piece of software on your Mac to open up a port on your AirPort using a protocol called NAT-PNP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wik.... I would guess that's how Simplify Media works. Your Mac can do this because it is inside your firewall.

Briefcase, runs on your iPhone will be on the outside of your firewall when you are on the road. That means that you need to manually set up the port forwarding on your AirPort. You need to forward port 22 to your Mac.

This link tells you how to do it (unfortunately they use an older version of the AirPort Utility:

http://portforward.com/engl...

Opening up the port at work is likely to be more difficult because you don't have access to the router.

Re: Blog Post: v1.1 Update and Spy Movie

There was as misunderstanding with Apple.
