There's now some really solid research on what does and does not work in learning (see the new book Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning as an example) and it's clear that content "cramming" just isn't retained. Immersion learning, however, can work if done right - not just a bunch of content dumping, but learning in context with application of what is learned.

Mickie Rops, MAEd, CAE

Re: Insanely cool conferences

Ben, I agree that ASAE Nashville also came to my mind as the closest I've come to an insanely cool conference. And it IS very important that everyone be in close proximity - contrast this to ASAE Chicago where all the hotels were spread out so everyone scattered after the event - the sense of community was much less than Nashville and even Boston.

I disagree, however, that it's not as much about the speakers. The speakers need to know how to create the experiences too! It shouldn't all be about the Harleys and surprises - although that's cool and can help set the stage. But, we need to create cool LEARNING experiences too!!!

Re: Insanely cool conferences

Isn't that sad that the last insanely cool conference you've attended was in 2002? Even sadder, I don't think I can claim to have ever attended an insanely cool conference! Can't wait to hear about others' experiences.
