Thanks so much for sharing your step-by-step guide in introducing blogging to kids. Love the idea of doing a paper blog with sticky note comments so they "see" in a more concrete manner what's really happening when they publish and comment. Also love the idea of blogging about what they are passionate about.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! :-)
-Michelle TG

Re: New TEDxDesMoines Talk – YOU MATTER

Hey, Angela--YOU matter! Your influence will be felt across Iowa/US/world as educators hear this and begin their school years conscientious about making sure students KNOW they matter.
Yep. YOU have made a difference.
Blessings!
Michelle

Re: Guest Post: My Wish For You

Such an honor to share this with your followers! Thanks, Angela, for the opportunity! I can say first hand that I've witnessed someone using Facebook to play games during a professional development program. I've also watched two teachers play sodoku, shop online, and freely text with their phones during professional development. So, I sympathize somewhat with the administration. Plus, can you imagine the LEGAL ramifications for the district if the wrong set of eyes sees something inappropriate posted by a teacher on a social networking site, especially during school hours?

HOWEVER, on the otherhand, to ban these tools based on the actions of a few is quite sad. Every district has software that can track users and what sites they frequent. Why not TALK to the offenders instead of punishing the masses? Then perhaps during such a conversation, the potential professional uses for these tools might be uncovered and shared in a way that the administration begins to UNDERSTAND their potential.

Ultimately, we need more teachers that consider themselves to be professionals and act as such.

-Michelle TG

Re: Chalk Talk 01/15/10

Hey, Angela, thanks so much for the hat tip to my blog. What a nice surprise and an honor to see it listed on your Chalk Talk this week. I have certainly learned SO much from YOUR blog and links each week! What a wonderful resource you provide here for educators. You are a KEY part of my PLN!
-Michelle :-)
a.k.a. "Mrs. T.G."

Re: The Future of Reading: The Problem is NOT the Books!

I have simply come to accept the fact that I am never going to fully have this whole "teaching" thing down pat like I dreamed I would after fifteen years. Feeling slightly off balance is exactly my own professional "zone of proximal development" that I need to grow as an educator. I think some teachers need to realize that it's OKAY for them to feel slightly lost or off balance as they move past a basal and skills driven program and toward focusing on the READERS instead. Doing so IS a little scary, but worth it and a necessary part of growing professionally.

ANOTHER wonderful post, Angela! I am SO sharing this with my colleagues!

Re: 21st Century Teaching Skills: Telling Stories that Stick

OMG, that had me ROTFLOL! ;-)
Thx 4 ANOTHER gr8 share!

Re: Mini-Lesson: Finding the Main Idea in Nonfiction Text

Thanks for sharing this lesson, Angela! Will pray for a time of peace as you go through next few weeks. Went through that with my mother & wouldn't wish it on anyone, BUT I was grateful for time to spend with her and have long talks before she passed away.

Also, thanks so much for sharing that quote from the hospital, Angela! Isn't that just like you? To find that gem in the midst of your sorrow. Just reminds us how important building relationships with our students really is. That should be a our FIRST "intention" when we teach, huh?

Take care,
Michelle

Re: New Year's Mantra: Teach With Intention

Angela, one of the things I love about you is your enthusiasm and passion for education. THIS idea ("mantra") is great and I am right there with you! Posting it in my classroom today.

Best wishes on your new year in working with teachers! Go get 'em!
