@modernmami Right? He really wanted an answer, understandably. Suffice it to say, I just told him it wasn't a nice word and that he shouldn't repeat it. I'm just glad he didn't say, "Well, why is everyone laughing?" If he did, I'd have to say, "I got nothing".

@LaTonya Wasn't life truly refreshing back then? When instead of staring at some screen (t.v., computer, smartphone, etc) we filled our heads with adventure and physical activity. I remember the days when I would play so hard that I come home exhausted. As though I'd put in a full day of work or something.

Jamie Foxx has a song called "Blame It" (on the Alcohol). Of all the nefarious events cause by various beverages in the son, beer was not among the culprits. Be proud!

I know I'm not eligible to win, but I'm all about the facial hair. The only reason I shave is because of my employment conditions. Facial hair allows for personal expression. However, I'm totally against bearded women.;-)

@John- Happy New Year, friend. I'm glad you stopped by. To your question, I think that would be acceptable simply it is more expeditious to use that as a descriptor. In our day-to-day casual conversations, most people try not tosay more than neccessary when making a point. Most of us would not take the time to say, "Do you see the fourth guy going clockwise around that circle of men starting at the 12 o'clock position wearing the green shirt and the khaki pants?"

I ask the question because I don't pretend to be qualified to say if this is appropriate or not. I leave it for "dear reader" to decide. In posts like these, I try to play the role of "devil's advocate" to spur the conversation.

Joe, these are good examples that you give. Particularly the "Kid 'n Play" example. In the Marvin Lewis example, why wouldn't it suffice to simply call him the "head coach of the Cincinnati Bengals"?

Deborah, you make a good point in saying that it would be ridiculous to try to use every adjective in the book just to avoid using race as a descriptor, but the point I'm making is when, for example, someone says, "There's this black guy that I go fishing with...". If there is a point to bringing up his race because it is important to the story, cool. Otherwise, why is it important? Awesome comment from you. Thanks for visiting.
