Diana Wynne Jones is one of my all-time favorite writers (RIP) and this book is one of my favorites. I also love Miyazaki and while I thought the movie version was good, I believe it doesn't do the book justice. He definitely added a lot of his own anti-war stance into the plot and I feel like Jones' book went so much deeper than that--like her fascination with parallel universes, how she wove John Donne's poem throughout the story, the realistic magic (which she does a great job with in all of her books), the humor, etc. I think Miyazaki really nailed Sophie's character down (and the soundtrack is great!) but I'll take the book (and the two sequels) any day.

I did read that Miyazaki was a huge fan of her writing, as well! So he must have great taste. ;)

(And Sophie did have magical powers all along. It's why she was so good at hat making; she brought them to life, which would grant people's wishes. She just never applied to herself.)

Re: Top 5 Unsung Heroes In Japanese American History

No women!?

Re: Do Asians Have the Worst Smelling Farts?

[insert comment about how you're welcome to write a guest post about something you'd rather see on 8A anytime]

Re: Watch Anne Hathaway Sing and Cry in the New ‘Les Miserables’ Trailer

19th century France = white people problems.

Re: Asian American Commercial Watch: Heineken’s The Date

Have you tried lying about your age?

Re: Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg Gets A New Asian Wife!

You realize I was kidding, right?

Re: The Carrie Diaries Trailer Proves That Minorities Do Exist In New York

Oh yeah.
