We have a £15million investment happening this year in a tech campus in a stunning waterside location, we are building an operating system for the city and launching our accelerator next month. Hull Digital has been going for five years and we have 550 members. It really is a thriving community with a huge amount happening over the next few years. We even have the City of Culture in 2017!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this - a terrific read. I'm also feeling that sense of optimism. A digital hub (the C4Di), Bridgehead and the critical FTTP... I can see a great future. We just all need to make sure it is delivered.

The LEP is also seeing the importance of digital and existing digital businesses. Helping every one of these grow, succeed, and employ more people should be a major priority and one I will be championing.

Paul, thanks so much for taking the time to write this. I found myself nodding away throughout the article.

I especially agree with two points in particular:

1) Bloody hard work but fun - the HDLive conferences have been exactly that, but the sense of satisfaction and the fact people loved attending makes all the worry, hair-pulling and sleepless nights worth it. At least I'm an old hand it now and will help this year ;-)

2) Location is irrelevant - Amen to this. I'm in a similar position with clients in NY, HK, Canada, France and Australia. We talk via Skype, and stay in touch using email, Basecamp and other web-based services.

The only limitation right now for digital businesses is trying to pick one to start with and focus on - so many ideas!

Spavin, thanks for your comment. I agree, it would have been nice to have fibre to the home many years ago (look at what Sweden did over ten years ago!), but rather than looking back, I try to look forward, and the opportunity ahead.

I don't think it's too late either and to blame KC entirely for Hull's issues and economic slowdown is wrong. An easy target but I firmly believe we also need to cast our gaze over the public sector and what they have been doing (or rather what they haven't been doing).

You mention people should open to their eyes to other parts of the country... is there anything happening which you've seen that we could replicate?

Hey Adam, thanks for dropping in! Totally agree about the brain drain. Keeping the motivated and talented people here in the region (or city) is critical.

Love your point about data centres and the cheap space available. Makes a lot of sense. Hope you can make a MeetUp soon - look forward to catching up.

Ian, terrific post and covering some cracking topics.

Is Skyrim, *that* good? Having read a few reviews and watched a view videos, it does look special... I need to come and have a look sometime! I bought both MW3 and Battlefield 3 and thoroughly enjoyed both, especially some of the set pieces in the latter.

Regardless of how I consume TV, I'm watching less and less of it. What's getting my attention? The wealth of great content online, and I'm starting to increase my podcast listening too.

I think you're right. 2012 should be a vintage year for content consumers. I really hope we get the Olympic coverage right.
