You could tax the 1% 100% of their income and still not have enough money. As for the Oakland protests. OWS in Oakland has been taken over by anarchists and communists. People in support of democracy and giving everyone a "voice" don't riot and destroy property.

Re: Vice president Joe Biden is no stranger to political demagoguery - Opinion - Daily 49er - California State University Long Beach

What you have hit on is that the Obama Jobs Bill, is really Stimulus II. Because all of the stimulus money that went to the states to cover up their budget shortcomings is running out, i.e., temporary, the Obama administration is trying another temporary fix that won't increase employment opportunities at all. They only want to save public sector union jobs so that they may receive higher campaign contributions from the public sector unions. The Obama administration doesn't care about increasing jobs in the private sector, at all.

Re: Our View: Players union should settle for 50-50 split in NBA contract - Opinion - Daily 49er - California State University Long Beach

I just saw on the crawl across the bottom of ESPN that a group of owners does'nt want to offer the player's union above a 47% split of the revenue. I have found that Congress shall make no law establishing a religion. That is a distinct difference from what you claim in your opinion piece. You state that values are a personal issue and cannot be legitimately taught by any form of religion. You state from where athiests do not receive their values but you do not state from where their values are received. Do you know? If so, where and what are those values, other than being boorish and derisive about your other planetary inhabitants solemnly held religious beliefs.

From your opinion piece I understand what athiests, or at least you, do not believe in. I suspect, but am not certain, that you believe only in the here and now. If that is the case, what purpose have you found in life? Does life have a purpose for athiests?

One thing I know that most religions of the world do teach is not to place their faith in other people. People generally tend to disapoint, them being human and all. I think all of us, whether athiest or believer, always have some trust issues of one sort or another. You keep trusting your fellow athiests with their values of indeterminent origin and I'll keep trusting those that have values that are similar to mine and are from well known sources. However, it is probably a good idea for both of us not to be completely trusting without using our God given critical thinking skills.

Re: Daily 49er - Our View- Attending a university may not be for everyone

In case you haven't been paying attention, we are in a recession and the unemployment rate is 9.7% and holding, for now. Unemployment has hit hardest in the trades, especially in the building trades. Those jobs in auto repair shops aren't opening up in great numbers, either. You are right in the basic idea of this article, though. Not all individuals belong in the colleges and universities. I do not believe that restricting access to higher learning is the answer. Academic competition seems to winnow out most of those who are not educationally prepared for college level learning. As for financing higher education, the U.S. government has taken over educational lending in the recently passed health care reform legislation. This means all college loans will be from Uncle Sam or this one particular bank in, I believe, Montana. I suspect that those with government loans will also receive beneficial payment plans should they accept government employment at some level.

Re: Daily 49er - Our View- Wealthy have moral obligation to support poor

You make no analysis in this article. It is clear that you are parroting mass media sources and have done no investigation into the meat of this issue. I no longer live in California and rarely get to see the 49ers play. I was proud of the effort that the team gave even though I was disappointed with the final result. I also got to see the team play earlier games during the season against Texas and Kentucky. They were in tough during those games but never quit. With most of the key players returning next year, I think hard work and the maturation process will hold out for greater expectations. I would suggest that the students in a low performing school would have little ability to contribute to the solution process in improving their school because, by definition, their school has failed to provide them with the wherewithall to enable such capability. Claiming that an underperforming school can have overachieving students is ludicrous, and I'm not talking about the rapper. Low performing schools forever damage the students forced to attend them. The teachers and administrators are primarily responsible for assuring that levels of student achievement are reached in the schools under their guidance. If they can't or won't correct the deficiencies identified in their schools, they must be held accountable and necessary action taken. An underperforming school is indefensible.

Re: Daily 49er - Our View- Virgnia Tech robs students of freedom to err

Whether one is old enough to go to war is not the point. Since there is no draft, going to war is a personal decision, not one enforced by government without the citizen's consent. Additionally, if one is arrested for underage drinking, it usually occurs off campus. If one is jailed overnight on a first offense of drunken driving, the least of one's worries is whether or not mommy and daddy find out about it. Besides, if an 18 year old needs bail, believe me, the school doesn't have to notify the parents.

If one is caught on campus for underage drinking, I believe that the school has a responsibility to take whatever action is necessary to protect the child from any harm that might reasonably be expected to follow from such behavior. What good is it if the only action taken by an institution of higher learning is notifying the parents of a student that their child has died from alcohol poisoning or some other alcohol related mishap? If you think that making mistakes that have life and death consequences is a right that may not be infringed upon, you don't have the intellect necessary for higher learning.

Re: Daily 49er - Our Proposal- Swiftian proposal will solve American problems

An easier solution is to have Congress pass a requirement that all persons must use tobacco by the age of 4 years. Over the course of approximately 35 years of tobacco use, sufficient tax revenues would enable the government to pay for all entitlement programs, including health care and saving the social security and medicare programs from going bankrupt. Very few would live long enough to become eligible to receive social security or medicare and healthcare bureaucrats could deny treatments for smoking related illnesses. The taxes filling the government coffers would easily pay forr the few who survived to become eligible for government entitlement programs. Addicting Americans to nicotine would solve many of the problems we face today and in the future.

Re: Daily 49er - Our View-Obama should 'AIM' at pardoning Peltier

Your account of the facts is incorrect. Understand this, it is not the absence of war. I am not aware of any peace existing in the world's history that was not imposed by the threat of unimaginable violence. There are evil people in the world who will take whatever they want by force. Unless those people are faced with a peril they are not willing to undergo, they will annihilate whomever they have to for whatever reason in order to get what they want. Slinking away from those who would visit violence on you does not guarantee peace. It guarantees that you will lose your freedom. This is not an argument in defense of war but an argument of what logically extends from the naivete of those who do not understand what the true nature of the world is.

Re: Daily 49er - Our View-Hunger becomes national security issue

Has no one heard of WIC? One of the stories I read stated the following:

"Pima County sheriff's Lt. Michael O'Connor told reporters in Arizona that Raul Flores had connections to Mexican drug cartels and his involvement was known to the Drug Enforcement Agency.

People in the Minuteman movement reacted to news of the arrests with sadness -- and some contempt for Forde.

Jim Gilchrist, president of the California-based Minuteman Project and a longtime Forde ally, said his group is separate and "we disassociate any affiliation between her, her organization and ours." On Friday he posted a message of condolence to the victims' families.

Jeff Schwilk, founder of the San Diego Minutemen and an outspoken critic of Gilchrist, said he and others long ago recognized that Forde was unstable and dangerous. He said Gilchrist should have done the same.

"The warning had been out in Arizona to stay away from this woman," he said. "Unfortunately, this conclusion was very tragic."

This Shawna Forde person appears to be a criminal opportunist and nothing more. My condolences to the Flores family.

Re: Daily 49er - Frustration over health care debate turning into call for action

What are you trying to say?

Re: Daily 49er - Our View-Governor slapped around by high court

Just a quick question--what does one do about former inmates who do not pay back the cost of their "rehabilitation"?
