Here are my show notes on the CO shooting. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

COLORADO SHOOTING, AWOP RADIO NOTES, 7/20/12
Sources: Chief Dan Oates, Aurora Chief of Police; Colorado Governor, John Hickenlooper, via MSNBC Press Conference coverage
• 12 dead, 59 injured, 30 still hospitalized, 11 still in critical condition
• Shooter legally purchased ak47, 2 glocks and shotgun
• In 60 days, purchased 4 guns local and ammo from internet: approx. 6000 rounds total, with 3000 .223 shells, 3000 .40 cal for glocks, 300 12 gauge shotgun rounds.
• Multiple mags 1 x 100 round drum magazine, capable of 50-60 rounds in 1 min.
• Assault weapons ban could have lessened the fatalities, limiting the size of extended magazines could have limited the casualties.

Shooter:
• Tactical ballistic helmet and vest, throat protector, protective leggings, gloves, groin protector, all in black, gas mask – all apparently legally available.
• No suicide by cop here – left building to go to car, possibly to head to additional locations (second Glock in car, rest of ammo)
• Dyed hair – bright red
• Told police he was “The Joker”
• PhD. candidate neuroscience, failing out, undergrad work at UC Riverside, Riverside, CA (possibly hometown? Not confirmed)
• UC Riverside School says he attended on a merit-based scholarship, and had, quoting those sources, “a brilliant mind.”

Booby-trapped apartment
• incendiary devices and trip wires, plastic bottles filled with fluid, appears to be sophisticated devices – he tipped off police re: bombs
• Five apartment buildings have been evacuated to local evacuation centers.
• Active work by bomb squad called off for the night.
• President puts politics aside – “This is a day for prayer and reflection.” Followed shortly by Romney doing same.
• Ads being pulled off in CO TV market.

In the theatre:
• Shooter appears to have purchased ticket and been inside initially in plain clothes.
• Left through exit in front and propped door open.
• Changed in car, parked just outside exit.

• Shot smoke canister, shot 1 shot with Glock over his head, then open fired on men, women and children with other weapons

Multiple neighbors say:
• Guy is quiet, lived alone, doors and windows shut all the time.
• Then blasting techno music last night – to draw people in.
• Neighbor knocked on door, tried knob, open, decided not to go in.

Oh, Jayne, I knew you were a teary one like me! Give me a marching band playing anything patriotic and I well up the minute it starts to play. Don't worry - we're in good company, as Our Gal Maddow does the same. Wonderful, lyrical piece, and it brought me right back to my own times at the fair each year. Thanks for that, Girl.

Jayne, your Dairy Queen episode reminded me of my extremely short-lived stint for Mrs. Fields' Cookies. Having had management experience, I was quickly shuttled into their "Cookie College" (and might I add what a tremendous crock o' s**t that entire experience was!). In addition to force-feeding us the use of a day-planner in more minute detail than one would ever dream, we were forced to scoop cookie dough with an ice cream scoop and attain some insane number of cookies in a specific time limit (one or two minutes, as I recall). It was truly the most ridiculous management task I've ever been asked to perform to date. You couldn't "graduate" from cookie college without successfully having this feat under your belt. So, I took the high road and quit, and dumped the day planner in the trash along with my cookie rejects on the way out. Best career decision of my life.

It was truly amazing to me how seriously these folks took the cult of Fields...it was sacrilegious to even consider questioning the proprietary procedure manual (aka The Gospel According to Debbie). Good God, I'd entirely forgotten about that two-week torture until your Dairy Queen story, Jayne. But I haven't eaten one of their cookies since!

25 mg daily of an old-school antidepressant isn't enough to even alter moods at all. But it put my severe, frequent migraines at bay - for the past five years. After trying all kinds of blood pressure, seizure meds and a bazillion other meds that should have, in theory helped, I researched Elavil, and my Doc prescribed it for me. Changed my life - literally!

Jayne, I am being stalked by extra pounds, but I have found where they live. They live in my couch. And the longer I spend there, the more they attach themselves to my backside and legs, and remain there as if attached by Super Glue. I swear that's how it has worked...

Sorry to have been such a reticent reader of late - always love your writing, but time has been at a premium, and I have been remiss in reading my friends' blogs. The online radio show is taking up more time than I thought, but I am loving every minute of it!

Lauren, I feel your pain! I am totally baffled by the whole google + business...I do not need or want yet another social media conglomerate in my life. My friends are already angry enough that I do not check my Facebook page but once a month, and I don't need another reason to be unfriended, or uncircled, or whatever the hell the term is on the latest social media forum. I am bombarded, and it's all I can do to read my google reader for my friend's blogs, tweet my latest post, and blog on my own site. Isn't that enough? I can't possibly keep up with it all - is there a name for this kind of overwhelm caused by social media? If anyone can tell me, you can, because you have such a knack for turn of phrase. Please help, my friend!

Yep. Oh, yeah. I know exactly what you're saying, Lauren. At first, I thought, "Well, it's just that all my energy is going into the radio show." Now, with Christmas vacation, and time to blog, I have found all kinds of other things to do instead...some legit, some not...either way, my poor blog is feeling neglected and I am wondering if I have just moved on to the radio portion of my online career vs. the printed word, or if this is just a phase I am going through. Aaaarrrgggh! Wish I knew! Of course, it could just be the HTML intolerance of which you speak, my friend. Unons are not perfect. I agree with you there. They have become powerful forces. But I still feel they are necessary. When I hear about the GOP trying to recall child labor laws, working to actively eliminate OSHA laws, trying to union-bust and completely eliminate collective bargaining, and laying off teachers, firefighters, nurses and police officers while making obscene corporate profits by doing so, I am convinced that unions are still necessary. And when the Supreme Court says that corporations are people, that doesn't give folks like you and me a chance in Hell over the kind of influence that the mega-millions corporations can now spend to influence the outcome of elections. Unions are one of the few liberal-leaning forces that can influence elections - our only fighting chance, you could say.

It's a shame in this country that, while folks like you and I are probably more moderate than not, our political parties can't seem to put their own interests (read: greed) aside and focus on the real needs of the working people of this country - jobs, security, a way to take care of our elderly, to keep our country healthy and heal the sick without breaking the bank. I am afraid that those special interests (banks, Wall Street, the insurance industry, corporations) will be able to out-vote folks like you and me, especially with the voter suppression going on across the nation.

Well, there's the Reader's Digest version of my argument, Monbid. What say you? Convinced? ;) Either way, please feel free to come by anytime.

Great post. It's pretty clear that Newt is in it for the money, considering all his scams of the past (e.g. awarding a strip club a prize for the reasonable donation of $5000...), and Herman Cain is only in it for the cash, that's obvious. But Newt does this every election year, and I don't think he ever intends to win. His exploratory committees usually raise enough to keep him living large until the next election cycle. This time, though, the clown car unloaded so many crackpot candidates that it makes Newt look like a saner choice than usual. Terrifying, really.

Hey, I am so sorry to hear about your migraines. I've suffered with them most of my life. Ask your doctor about taking a small dose of Elavil, an old-school antidepressant. I've kept my migraines at bay for 4 years now - it's changed my life.

Thanks for the respectful and civil comments, Pave. I was out shooting today, a 308 rifle and a fun little 22 my boy is fond of. I think both sides get painted as extremes, when in reality, liberal or conservative, are far more to the middle than the media would like us all to think!

The truly nasty comments have been far fewer than the respectful ones by folks like yourself, and I thank you for that.
