That's funny! A group of crafty gals and I headed out to Uwajimaya (local Japanese superstore, I'm sure you have haunted the book aisles, Diane!) to check out the crafty books and were overwhelmed with the inventiveness of the projects found in the books. Maybe a part of it is that the styles and projects still feel fresh and new to us? And possibly they view the projects in our craft books with the same amount of awe?

Well, probably not... I think the Japanese just have an aesthetic that simply resonates very powerfully with us now. It's possible that in 20 years, simple, clean and adorable might look as tired to us as those geese in bonnets do now....

I'm letting go of the idea that my etsy shop has to make a dozen sales a week for me to feel successful! I'm just going to do what makes me feel happy, no matter what the sales are!

Congrats! What a smart, relevant topic! My etsygreetingsteam and I have been discussing this topic at length lately. For an online business, there are just a lot of inexpensive opportunities to promote yourself -- great to get the skivvy from someone like you, though!

It's quantity vs. quality. The big craft stores, of course, have massive quantity but each item, on the whole, doesn't seem to be as nice as the indie stores -- findings seem flimsier, paper not nearly as cute, etc. On the other hand, things are CHEAP at the big box stores.

Plus there is often that enticing 40% off coupon that I cut out religiously from the paper every week that the little stores can't afford to offer.

Another way they could use a hand: they accept donations of craft supplies, so if you're looking to destash, this would be a wonderful way to find your treasures a new home!

I used to go there ALL the time when they sold spools of the wool yarn they used for their blankets. It was great wool -- we use it all the time for felting, fabulous stuff, only $5 a lb...

Nowadays, I'm COMPLETELY haunting the Goodwill Outlet, just around the corner from the Pendleton Outlet -- have you been there? I just got a FABULOUS little table that I'm going to make over for only $5. Great, solid wood, lots of character.... I found a whole box of vintage buttons there and thought of you (everything's by the pound, $1.59)...

OMG! It's been SOOOO hot here! At work, it seems to be mandatory protocol to start each discussion about how amazingly hot it's been.... my craft room is upstairs, so this has NOT been good for my crafting lately!!!!
