I mean, it was probably some of the best I've ever had. Almost like Stouffer's, but not nearly as salty, and without that fake sharp cheddar taste. I could eat this mac & cheese every week, but then I'd weigh about 400 pounds.

Re: Good image hosting is hard to find

Cool! I thought to myself, "Hmm. I wonder how hard it would be to swap out a dead hard drive in an iMac." Next to the Mac Pro, MacBooks probably have the easiest HD swap. Then iMacs, then Mac minis.

Re: Chicago, one of my favorite cities.

"The hubby"? As expected, the website is truly awful. I mean, it's a complete train wreck with no survivors. If Tucson were destroyed, all of my backups would be destroyed as well. Then again, since I'm in Tucson 98% of the time, I'd also be destroyed, and thus, probably wouldn't care too much about not having any remaining backups. ;-) My most critical files (up to 50GB of them, anyway) are encrypted and stored in my Dropbox account.

My friend Vince pointed out that I should really have dual-redundancy backups since a 1TB drive could easily fail during a recovery operation. There are a few different avenues I'm considering, but EyeTV will most likely be involved at some point. I'm thinking I'm probably gonna go with a Mac mini connected to the TV along with a MythTV box hidden away in the office. The HDHomeRun has two tuners, so I can record with the Myth box while we watch something different live on the mini. It's nice to know that EyeTV has decent recording features, though.

The other integration sounds cool, but we won't be able to take advantage of it. Neither of us have an iPhone, and there's nary an Apple TV to be found in the entire house. I'm sure they'll make a Palm Pre app any day now, though... (hahahahahahaha! What am I talking about? NOBODY makes apps for the Pre!)

That sounds about right for how much space the encoded files take up. At 720p, a 30-minute show is about 600M, and a 60-minute show is exactly double that. It's a good thing disk space is cheap, or else this wouldn't even be feasible.

Re: 12.22.2009 10:51 | jyoseph.com

You were close. ;-) The host key is usually generated when OpenSSH is installed. The first time you connect to that host, your local SSH client caches the host's key. Every subsequent time you connect to the host, your local SSH client compares the key being sent for that session to the one that's already cached. If the keys don't match, there's a good chance that the host has been spoofed.

Obviously, when you re-imaged the ATV, a new host key was generated, hence the scary warning.

Re: eyeTV Hybrid Screenshots | jyoseph.com

Since I'm about to do this myself in a week or two, I'm curious about some of the details. Are you using a dedicated box for recording, or does it also do other things? And what about storage? I imagine that uncompressed HD video takes up an epic amount of space.

Any problems after using this setup for a few months?

Re: Brita: A+ customer service

It's been a while since i contacted them, but you might want to check out their warranty information page:http://www.brita.com/support/warranty-info/

Re: ScanSnap first look. On Newegg, the S1300 is oddly about $10 cheaper than the S300 and about $20 cheaper than the S300M. It's a total win for me since I use both OS X and Windows at home.

Newegg listings for ScanSnap scanners: http://ma2t.me/m

Re: The lesson of Ikea. (Scripting News)

I think it depends a lot on what you're looking for and also on which line of IKEA furniture you end up buying. If you're careful and only buy the "high-end" IKEA stuff (if there is such a thing), it'll last a good 5-10 years or more. They definitely have some cheap crap that's only designed to last through college, but some of their office furniture (Galant desks) and entertainment center pieces (Besta series) are pretty decent.

Putting it all together is part of the fun. Why pay someone else to deliver it to my house when my vehicle is perfectly capable of transporting furniture? Why pay someone else to assemble it when I enjoy using the tools I own and would have probably spent the same Saturday afternoon putzing around on the internet instead? IMO, it's like LEGO for adults, and I really loved LEGO as a kid. :-)

My last point is that a lot of the stuff IKEA sells is modular. We were able to take advantage of this to create the exact home office layout we wanted and the exact entertainment center cabinet we wanted. We bought our couch and dining room table from a local furniture store, but we wouldn't have been able to achieve the same level of customization if we had bought our other stuff from the same place.

Re: ScanSnap first look. I'm amazed that businesses with thousands of accounts on Google Apps are satisfied with the level of service they're getting.

I think it'll take an exceptionally squeaky wheel (i.e., a huge business customer) for this issue to even show up on Google's radar screen.
