I missed several newstips/press releases. I just sighed and cursed facebook again for changes that I find unnecessary and annoying. Facebook likes to control your facebook life in several ways. Thanks for reading and commenting. I completely agree with you that I, and other journalists, can track metrics and develop strategies by simply asking. These aren't the analytics the industry measures and takes to advertisers. I hope the industry moves in this direction where these real-life responses are viewed just as responses from a marketing test group are taken.

I'm developing a morning strategic social engagement plan for the morning shows based on trial, error, conversations and feedback, not hard numbers. I'll see the numbers grow when I have a solid plan in place. Then I can take those results to the people who need hard numbers to make decisions.

Thank you for your compliment :)

Re: 90-day review of myself

Thanks Amy!

Re: Working to define, not be defined

Scott I truly am lucky I was asked. I hope you and other are asked the same thing soon.

Re: Working to define, not be defined

Thanks Gina :)

Re: Twitter note to my fellow area Jouranlists

Thanks for reading and commenting Tim.

Re: Twitter note to my fellow area Jouranlists

Thank you!

Re: Twitter note to my fellow area Jouranlists

Thanks Kyle. I have to remind myself that just because I see social media use in one way, that others have a complete different use and opinion of it. That's kinda the beauty of it - social media can be whatever you want it to be. Now whether or not others respect what you're doing is a whole other situation. I agree completely with you that it's not competition. I think if you make it only about competition you'll never see it's full potential.

Re: http://www.newstracks.org/comments.php

Thank you for taking the time to look at News Tracks. While I haven't received comments here, I have received comments and critique through emails and discussions. I would like to answer a couple of the questions I've been asked as people have reviewed News Tracks.

First though, my heartfelt thanks goes to my friend Deb, who gave me advice and copy edited sections for me. Thank you Deb!

The question I've been asked the most has been, why? Why did I choose this for the Knight News Challenge. I receive call after call and email after email at my job claiming that either I because I work at the station, or the station in general, is bias in some way or another. I'm asked about bias almost every time I speak at events. Personally I don't think it's fair to be judged as a whole, especially when that whole is dictated by national media. Not once in my 10 year career have I or any reporter or producer been told to tell a story in a certain way because of politics, advertisements, associations, etc. When I tell people this often I'm given the "yeah right face."

I thought this over and decided providing a place where all news coverage could be reviewed in a matter-of-fact style would be a way for people to see one complete picture. From this picture then they could make an informative decision if any bias exists.

People also don't consider the amount of people that are involved in the majority of news stories. Often more than one reporter takes a look at a story. That means at least two videographers will work the story. Then there are the producers of each show that have a part in the presentation of the story. In my opinion all of these personalities make it virtually impossible for one bias to come through.

Then finally as more and more consumers turn to cable news and online news, local stations need to be able to have a strong online voice. According the the 2010 State of the News Media Report, from 2008-2009 only cable and online news had growth, while local stations, print and radio saw declines. While the web isn't making money for these stations, the web has got to be an important focus for any station. Each station handles updating the web differently. I'm hoping News Tracks will be able to show both positive and negative trends that stations can use to make themselves better.

The second main question I've been asked is will I continue to work at the station if News Tracks is funded, or will I continue to work News Tracks regardless of funding and still work at the station. The answer to this is no. Ethically I could not work at any media organization while working on News Tracks. There would be a huge conflict of interest, as well as insider knowledge. News Tracks as you see it now will not grow beyond what you see now unless funded. If that happens then I will resign from the station to see News Tracks through to completion.

Again, thank you for taking a look at News Tracks. Please continue to share your thoughts and opinions.

Misty

Re: Good-bye press release I didn't even open

I find many organizations from community to government assign public relation roles to individuals who have never had any formal communication training. For example, there are several Colorado sheriff's offices that has the sheriff, undersheriff, deputy, or administrative officer write and distribute press releases. These outstanding officers of the law keep us safe, but sometimes lack in press release skills.

Re: My request for prayers and thoughts for upcoming surgery

You're prayers were definitely heard! I will go through the attachments to see what information we need for the info file, for graphics, etc. My frustration that lead to this post was the fact that I receive releases without any information in the body of the email besides the senders name. That tells me nothing. Yesterday one email literally had the subject "Press Release", A word doc attachment, and a name of sender in body of email, no phone number, no address, nothing more. I deleted it because I had 15 other emails calling for attention, 3 phone lines ringing and reporters who needed me to do background searches for them.

If I were to receive an email with a multimedia release attachment, but still had no infor in the body of the email to tell me what this was all about, I would most likely delete it if I'm under multiple demands from everything else I'm handling.

Thanks for reading and for commenting.
~Misty

Re: Good-bye press release I didn't even open

Thanks everyone for reading and for commenting.
