I'm at the point where I no longer care 'what plays well' frankly. We're going to be demonized by the right and Fox News *regardless* of what we do - we may as well stay true to our own principles instead of doing this stupid dance trying to fit into a set of rules the other side erected (but does not at all play by).

That's a thing I don't get.

Why does such a large chunk of the beltway media *still* kowtow when Trump assaults them on a constant basis? I got the access journalism thing when it was Bush 'merely' freezing out unfriendly outlets* - it was stupid then, but I could at least see the flawed reasoning.

But what the actual fuck is even the point of trying to appease people who's ideology includes the plank "THE PRESS IS THE ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE"? That's like being a mouse and trying to appease the cat - it's not going to happen. Cats kill mice. It's what they do. The only thing I can really come up with is "billionaires own the news and they still think they can get useful things out of Trump" - but even that has me scratching my head a bit now that he's started this trade war. That's not going to be good for anyone, including billionaires. So WTF? I just... I don't get it.

There are good uses for civility; but those are circumstances that rarely have existed. Civility works when you have two groups of peers* debating wonky matters of policy and you need to keep people from getting hot over a .45% marginal increase to the taxation on watering your lawns.

As you rightly note civility is useless in writing actual wrongs, especially when there's a power imbalance. Maybe that won't always hold true. Maybe somewhere on Earth you can be civil with the worst people and things will work out (I'm assuming wherever that would be true, the worst people are honestly not that bad.) - but fascism doesn't respond to nicety. If anything it thrives on people trying to keep their heads down and pretend Everything Is Normal, which is what that poem that's been badly abused at times is about.

There's a reason the allies didn't send Hitler a fruit bowl and ask him to please stop running over Poland if he could maybe do that, it would be swell. There's a reason we didn't politely request Tojo apologize for blowing up our Navy and invading our territory. I grant this is a (frustratingly only slightly) extreme metaphor, but it is accurate.

So yeah.

*Actual peers, as in economically and socially on the same playing field. Ie: something that almost never has happened in US history except maybe at the inception of the country, and only then because only white men were given any consideration at all so nobody else was even considered except as property.

... wasn't that something the Nazis actually did? I've not looked into it like super deep or anything, but I seem to recall there being this whole effort to spin Christianity with Jesus in the role as some German mythical hero - Positive Christianity I think it was.

I could be misremembering the details mind, like I said it' snot something I've studied; but that mental image (used seriously rather than to comic effect) sets off my Nazi alarm so I figure it's worth mentioning anyway.

You will get only agreement from me there. And I'm growing more optimistic, but that optimism hinges on us showing up, and not just showing up - but drowning the polls. I want so many of us to show up that even districts that normally have plenty of voting machines have a hard time keeping up. I want to turn the board so blue that Mitch McConnell will turn red, then green. I think it's possible.

People like her are why I remain optimistic. It's not that the times aren't dark; it's that, as the old saying goes "This too shall pass." - and the people creating this storm will too. I hate that that's where we're at though. And of course we must remain active and vigilant to make sure they have a place to inherit. But we can do that.
