I found my own answer. :)

Just create a new Mailbox in Mail (Mailbox -> New Mailbox...) and place it in your [Gmail] folder, then file the mail. The new mailbox appears as a filter in GMail upon your next sync. The only "gotcha" is that you have to do two steps; in the web interface, it's done in one.

Re: A tip for using IMAP with Gmail and Apple Mail

I'm a bit off-topic here, but maybe you can help me, James. :)

Is there any way to create a new folder in Mail (v4) which generates a new label in GMail? Or must I visit the web interface to create a new label each time I encounter a message which requires it?

Re: Dear Apple, I have a #FeatureRequest for #iOS4

Naah. I've been reading your blog for a while, met you once in person and listen to AMBs... you often go a little too far over-the-top for my tastes, but you're right on-target with this post.

Anyone who thinks that man is a good creature who sometimes does evil is nuts; wrong-doing is our natural state and it takes significant effort to do otherwise. This is the foundation of my philosophical belief-system.

Re: "Perhaps Abraham Lincoln made a mistake.

Good point, Cody. Can you provide a source for the quote from 2003? Of course, I'm not sure I still agree with everything I said that long ago. :)

I didn't want to raise the point about single-payer health care in the midst of that other discussion because, despite being wrong about that point, jjsperenza's main point was valid.

Re: "Perhaps Abraham Lincoln made a mistake.

Well-said. :)

Thank you for a cogent, polite and well-reasoned argument. In the world of online political discussion, that is, unfortunately, a rarity. I've always tried, when involved in discussions like this, to avoid fighting and focus instead on identifying points of disagreement for the sake of clarity.

We've gotten there: you support a President who actively tries to move our country to the Left, while I do not. I maintain my distress over how many voters supported President Obama without understanding -as you do!- that his agenda was to do just that.

Re: "Perhaps Abraham Lincoln made a mistake.

No... don't change the topic. I wasn't discussing Senator McCain, I was discussing a clearly stated position that then-Senator Obama held during the campaign and continues to hold now that he's President which many of his supporters are not aware of.

I read lots of posts and hear plenty of discussion in which supporters of President Obama talk about his pro-gay marriage position... which simply doesn't exist.

I'm not rehashing election issues - I'm trying to prove a point: many of the President's most vocal supporters are simply not aware of many of his positions on controversial issues. They suppose that he holds the same position they do, but he does not. The issue of gay marriage is one example.

Re: "Perhaps Abraham Lincoln made a mistake.

Not to pick a nit, but President Obama does not support same-sex marriage (look here: http://www.whitehouse.gov/i....

Sort of supports my theory that most people who voted for the President don't really know what his position is on most issues.

Re: Mister D Says... - “The market reception for Zune is so disappointing...

I have to admit that his comment was entertaining!

Re: @mikedalena regarding same-sex marriage

Matt,

First of all, thanks for such a thoughtful and articulate reply.

Now, to respond to your first point, I don't agree that a strong familial bond will lead close relatives to create a strong marriage... the "well-documented problems" you refer to will work against that possibility. Let me say it this way: if you posit that the purpose of a marriage is to create a strong family and the purpose of a family is to raise children, then the purpose of marriage is to allow for the raising of healthy, well-adjusted children.

Not everyone agrees with that stipulation, but it is the foundation of my position.

Re: Just proving my point

You're right that we can't criticize Obama's presidency until it's over... but we can criticize his proposed policies - particularly the ones that have been tried and failed in other countries.

In any case, comments like Bill's have no place in a political discussion, which was my original point. Wishing failure to a bad policy is not the same thing as wishing that someone you disagree with gets hit by a bus.

My major point is that, as a group, those on the left are far more unreasonable in the things they say than those on the right.

Re: I am not grieving

Ged,

Thanks for commenting.

Where in my post do I "deride" President Obama? I criticize his positions, explain why I disagree and call for reaction. Where is the derision?

And, if I believe that his ideas are wrong and bad for my country, why would I wait a year to let people know? "Give him at least a year to screw things up"? Are you serious?

As far as public figures wishing President Bush ill? I don't have the stomach to read through the transcripts, but I suspect you could find what you're looking for on Bill Maher's website. In any case, I am not sure what the point would be. As Dave said, Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer, not a commentator. I don't take him seriously... why would you?

Re: I am not grieving

Wow... lots to respond to.

First, Dave:

- When I said that, "you're going to see far more civil criticism of President Obama from the Right then you did of President Bush from the Left" I meant that the criticism you will see of President Obama will be far more civil... not that there will be more of it. I expect that you'll see less derision, less name-calling and less profanity. I could be wrong... but that's what I expect, because I think that, while folks on the Left hate President Bush, folks on the right distrust President Obama. But, we'll have to wait and see.

Arguing Politics
---------------------
I don't agree with you that arguing politics is pointless. My goal in writing these (admittedly over-lengthy) posts is to try to achieve clarity. I understand that I will probably not change your mind... but I want to make clear the areas in which we disagree. I think that's productive.

Taxes
---------
I don't understand your response. You say, "As a citizen, I ought to do my part and chip in. I'm not thrilled about it, as I said, but I understand why it must be done. It's my duty and I do it." But, my point was that, under President Obama's proposed tax plan, over 50% of Americans will end up paying no income tax at all! How is that doing our duty?

I believe that's a dangerous idea because, once tax-payers become a minority, how can they ever hope to have their voice heard in a democracy? By creating a majority of non-tax-paying voters, this policy could lead to a class war unlike anything we've seen... it's an actual disincentive to be financially successful.

Let's approach it from another angle: I once heard someone propose that every citizen should get a vote and then be given the opportunity to earn more votes by paying income tax. The idea was that for every x dollars one pays, (s)he earns another vote. It sounds absurd, but it's precisely the way publicly traded corporations operate.

Now, we would never implement such a system because it would allow the wealthy to impose their power unfairly, right? Creating a majority of voters who don't have to pay any tax at all leads to a similar conclusion - why would they ever want to change the government?

Saying that the wealthy class should pay more simply because they can afford to is bad policy. I ask all of my children to clear the table after dinner and the younger ones do easier jobs... they clear less than the older ones, but they don't get off scott-free. How is an income tax different?

(My final word on taxes is this: please don't put the f-word into my mouth. I didn't (and never would) use it in the context of a serious political discussion. By doing so, you've supported the first point I made about less civil criticism coming from the Left.)

Denouncing the President
------------------------------------
We have found a point of agreement: I don't think it's right to denounce the seated President, either. However, I didn't, not in this post nor any of the others I've written. What I *did* do was outline why I don't think President Obama's domestic policies make sense and I don't want him to implement them.

I want to be clear on this: PRESIDENT OBAMA IS MY PRESIDENT... however, I can think he and his administration are wrong about some things and I will continue to try to explain those positions. I don't hate the man... how could I? I've never met him. I suspect that, if I did, I would like him quite a bit.

However, I do disagree with him on a number of issues. I disagree with you from time to time, too... but that doesn't prevent me from liking you! :)

Now that we're clear on the points of difference, let's work on resolving them.

Re: Misinterpreting "Whopper Virgins"

Dave,

Thanks, both for your thoughtful response and for the link in your original post.

I find that, in debates like this, clarity of position is far more important than agreement. I don't think that I believe you (or anyone else, for that matter) is an "ugly American," but at least we now have an idea where each other's position comes from and where we might go next in our discussions. :)

Re: Mister D Says...

This is a test comment.
