After the Chilton video he's huddled in on himself and shaking, and she talks to him slower and s l o w e r until by the end of the session he's sat back in his chair as icily calm as she is. The *content* of the conversation is all about how it was Will's fault this happened to Chilton (which I don't agree with: it was Alana's fault if anyone's), so you would think Will comes out feeling worse, but he comes out feeling better. He's opposite Zachary Quinto: the only kind of shrink that works for him is a sociopathic shrink.

Re: Hannibal: The Number Of The Beast Is 666

It's not a nice thing to do to Chilton, but I assumed that was the point -- to implicate the audience emotionally. If anything, in the movies you knew nothing about Freddy Lounds except that he was a smarmy dick with no backstory and 3 minutes of screen time before he got offed, so you didn't care except for the fact that it's an awful way to die. Whether it had been Freddie or Chilton here, it's a character the audience has had 3 seasons' worth of history with.

Re: Hannibal: Digestivo

The acting is really subtle, particularly from Mads/Gillian, and I've always been curious whether people *didn't* pick on it (a lot of ppl seem not to in this thread!), because it actually impacts me with a lot *more* emotional immediacy than regular TV/movie acting. I think my subconscious finds it more realistic. I perceive "regular" acting as cues, in the same way as soundtrack music is a cue -- "Oh, this facial expression means this guy is sad." But I react to Mads Mikkelsen in particular as if I were watching a real person have that emotion in real time. It actually peeves me off, kinda, because I don't *want* to feel sorry for Hannibal, lol -- he tried to open Will's head up last episode! -- but because *I'm* not a psychopath, I can't help feeling sorry for him. Watching that rejection scene for me was literally like watching someone at the next restaurant table get dumped by their SO, waves of emotional pain just rolling off this guy, they kept the camera on Mads's face for upward of 10 seconds and I could barely look at the screen. So I guess the answer for me is, subjectively the show isn't cold/glossy/mannered for me at all -- it's a roiling mess of adolescently-intense feelings.

Re: Hannibal: “Aperitivo”

I was actually really looking forward to how the show was going to cover off the "Hannibal's past" question, so the third episode was the one I found most enjoyable thus far, because it took the narrative into completely new territory.

I guess, having read the novels and found out Jack/Will/Abigail's fates/headspaces in the previous episodes, there were only a few ways things could pan out for the rest. It's not that I didn't find individual scenes affecting etc., it's that Bella was obviously dead anyway, Mason has been out for private revenge since the end of S2, Chilton is unsurprisingly still a douchebag, and so on. The only new information** in the entire episode is Alana's life choices. I guess I'm with the folks who say this should've been E3.

** Well, and Will's Chekhov's sailboat I guess. Maybe S3 ends with Hannibal escaping from jail and the two of them literally sailing into the sunset, not actually putting it past king troll Fuller at this point.

Re: Hannibal: “Aperitivo”

I kind of agree that this may have worked better as the premiere, since there's a fair bit of repetitive information once you've extrapolated from the first three eps, but I'm baffled at folks who think this moved faster than eps 1-3. Whereas every one of Hannibal's awkward murder dinners has me howling in laughter for minutes. The original draft of this had a lot more about how the investigation in Buenos Aires was resolved and how Clarice was reinstated, but it was sort of boring, and my writing group said it was unnecessary -- you can assume that Clarice will do her job and she will be all right.

(Actually, the original draft ended with Clarice getting promoted to head a team and then getting a mystery gift basket XD;; But it was mooted to me, and I think this is a really interesting insight, that if Will were going to "remake" Hannibal (more or less with his consent) the first thing he'd head off at the pass is this abusive-ex behaviour of sending "I still know where you live" presents. Put down that phone, Hannibal! I see you dialing 1-800-FLOWERS! The point of the exercise is to try *not* being a creepy serial killer for once!)

Re: Mega Buzz: Will Dr. Lecter Be Captured During Hannibal's Third Season?

It's not -- the "dangerous ally" might actually be Mason, if Alana is looking to chase after Hannibal extrajudicially. But who knows! So then it's like, what is wrong with you? XD But that's not the Hannigram shipper's thought process in the first place. (I don't even believe a relationship with Will is the best thing for Hannibal, depending on how you argue that -- it's also wrecked *his* comfortable life and made him miserable.)

Anyway, I've tried to explain this to people, and then they're like "Oh I don't mean you then, I mean those *other* shippers." XD I thought Freddie was annoying in S1 but she gradually became very fun to watch, even in the absence of the effort the show made to humanize Chilton. It takes me aback, in general, when people say "so and so character is annoying and I wish Hannibal would kill them off" -- I know they aren't real and I may not be completely gutted, depending, but I wouldn't think that. People say it all the time when I get them to watch this show, though!

Sympathetic male characters: let's see what they do in S3 (I get the sense that Pazzi may be sympathetic, forex). Assuming Will and Jack's survival -- and my guess is Jack will die before the end of the series -- there really weren't that many non-killer male characters to begin with. I suppose they could do away with the rest of Team Science.
