You just touched my heart and memory of my George. He was a short-haired Ginger/Tabby. I had him for 15 years. He had become blind from Diabetes, but still rule the house. I gave him insulin injection for 4 years before it was his time to cross the Rainbow Bridge.

Re: Dr. Ralph Zech

When I was a child, I remember my father stating clearly that Dr. Zech was the finest surgeon in the country. I believe that. Not only was he an incredible surgeon, he and his beautiful wife Bette have been incredibly generous to this community in so many ways. My sister recently had emergency surgery at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Enumclaw. While I sat waiting for the doctor to come out and tell me how the surgery went, I walked up and down the huge corridor that had been aptly named after the Zechs. It was so comfortable to see that the hospital chapel had been donated by them as well. I felt embraced by love while there. Bette, you are an angel and all of us in the Cascade Foothills Chorale are holding you close in our hearts right now. Those of us who grew up in Enumclaw went to school with the Zech children. The Zech family has made the most positive impact a family possibly could in a community led by the graciousness and faith of Dr. Zech and Bette. May God hold the Zech family in the palm of His hands. Thank you Doctor for healing so many and for being such a wonderful man.

Re: Quit complaining and do something to fix problems - Enumclaw Courier-Herald

Yes, indeed. There is free speech. Even for those who torture us with their on-going political debates that bore the h-ll out of the average reader in this community paper. A while back I think I recall recommending these handful of armchair politicians to meet once a week at a coffee shop or bar and duke it out verbally so that they spare the rest of us politically inept folks the great wisdom they have to share with us. Can't you just see our one "peace" officer in Enumclaw who also shares his political view, crashing their beverage party and setting them all straight with his rightwing might? Ha! I just about gag every time I see these people's names appear in the editorial section. Most of us keep quiet. We honor the free speech rights, but then there are some gutsy people that write and say they have finally had enough of the constant bantering and BS. Dare anyone write anything negative about their continual diatribe, they sling the same slanderous, name calling insults back like spoiled children trying to one-up each other. They use the gift of free speech and the newspaper like an adult playground. It’s just like Heather DeRosa said." I think we all have had enough of your ranting about our government." Thank you, Heather. You rock! But they'll continue. I know this just as I know fools who love the sound of their keyboard tapping away. It’s a power trip... Isn't it boys? Poor babies. You have no where else to go play. That's ok. I just turn the page. Now don't disappoint me, fellas. Let me have it. I won't respond, but you'll feel very manly and intelligent I'm sure.

Re: In a community that embraces art, we should too - Enumclaw Courier-Herald

I saw Justin go against the "rocker" last night. Parents don't seem to want to teach their children boundries and that is what little ones look to... guidelines to keep them safe, secure and within the law. I hear nothing but profanity spewing from teens mouths as they walk down the sidewalk in town, not caring who is within earshot. The lack of respect is what happens when they have no one to look up to. We are to be examples, not the "Do as I say, not as I do!" parents. This world is going to hell in a handbasket in this instant gratification society. Education, set goals and respect are what we are suppose to teach our kids. This doesn't seem to be happening.

Re: OUR CORNER: Keep the ideas, lost the violence - Enumclaw Courier-Herald

You message is greatly appreciated, Brian. Our population; healthy and ill are growing faster than what we appear to be able to cope with, however. We do use prisons as storage centers for our mentally ill or drug addicted. Because of the enormous size of our sick and addictive people we address some of their needs with "in house" AA or NA meetings, complete with visiting sponsors from the outside. It's a small step in the right direction. I don't know how one eats an elephant other than one bite at a time. Who truly runs the infrastructure of prisons? How many truly ill people will be lost forever because of our inability to address their medical needs? Addiction is something that is so overwhelming to some people to recognize correctly, it is easier to sweep addicted people under the rug and regard the addicted as less than human. Being a survivor of living with an addict for 10 years, I am familiar with living in that environment of confusion, hope, disappointment, financial ruin, lies and survival. I did not desert the addict in my life. I took control of my life for my own sake. I did not par-take in drinking, shooting up or popping pills. Addiction can be put into check, but only with the co-operation and determination of the addicted. I believe it is the worst, most insidious disease of mankind. It is a human tragedy. I am a survivor who personally cannot be around an addicted person again. I was living with a person I had hope for...who had been through 3 inpatient treatment centers and years of AA. I was waiting for that miracle AA talks about. It never happened. I had to divorce this person in order to establish sanity in my own life. I could NOT fix him. A need for sobriety and getting clean from drugs has to come from within the addicted. I started living when I got out of that relationship. This is why it is so very hard for the public to embrace this horrible, horrible disease. Most, including treatment centers and prisons, have no idea how to address the problem. It is a disease of society, of the mind, body and spirit. It is a tragedy of mankind. As our population rises, it is only going to get worse, until science discovers a way to stop addictive nature. In the mean time, I am grateful I lived through a gut wrenching experience of living with an alcoholic/addict who was also a convicted felon and con man. I was completely and totally deceived. I had to look for the hope and healing for ME. Al-Anon was crucial in saving my sanity. How does a facility determine whether a prisoner is rehabilitated ENOUGH to release them into society again? I would not want the responsibility. Unfortunately, relapse is always on the horizon in the majority of cases.

Re: Councilman urges “no” vote on liquor initiatives - Enumclaw Courier-Herald

I totally agree with you, Mr. Elfers. I don't like the idea of more booze being available in "quick-stop" stores and I don't see it profiting anyone except grocery outlets like Costco. My other concern is that it's hard enough to control being sold through "liquor stores". Kids are going to find a way to obtain the stuff, but why make it easier? Your common sense, fiscal reasons for Enumclaw's welfare is a huge reason to vote no. Call me old fashioned... but also call me a wise old woman.

Re: Not thrilled with new name for new hospital - Enumclaw Courier-Herald

I am not Catholic, so I wasn't familiar with St. Elizabeth. I was born in the Enumclaw Community Hospital in 1951. The hospital was just a couple of years old. I also had my son there 34 years ago.

I don't want to lose anymore of hometown Enumclaw to larger industrial organizations. I understand that there was an agreement that we could keep our current name when the plans for the new hospital were drawn up. What happened to that? I looked up the name of St. Elizabeth. She was indeed a servant of God. She believed she had to suffer in order to gain grace in the eyes of God. And suffer she did. Although she had access to large amounts of money she gave most of it away to the poor. She also dedicated herself to those in need to the point she ended up having her own children taken away from her since she was too weak and ill to care for them. She died a relatively young woman. She felt guilty for eating more than a few bites due to the starving people around her. She felt she had a mission and held true to it until her death. St. Elizabeth is a nice name for some hospital, but it doesn't give me any warm fuzzy in my heart either when I know my hometown hospital will be named that. We know that this hospital will be Franciscan. Can't we stick to the original agreement and keep Enumclaw in the hospital's official title?

Re: WALLY'S WORLD: Recovery? It was well thought out and gives us factual circumstances in a very difficult time. I also believe it will be years before we recover, but recover we will. We are Americans. We will adjust and re-invent ourselves. I believe it's going to be hardest on folks between 55 and 70 who have refused to learn how to turn on a computer. It has become a digital world. If we stand firmly planted and refuse to progressively learn about new technologies we will be left in the dust wondering what happened to the good old days. Nostalgia is good. I'll be 60 next year and I was born in Enumclaw. I find I can and want to embrace both worlds of old and new as long as I have a mind that I can encourage to grow. I don't want to be left behind and there is a whole new world ahead of America. I believe we will become much stronger from what we have experienced through this recession. We simply have to be able to lay the ground work of encouragement to new horizons. Thank you again for a fine article.

Re: President should think twice about accomplishments - Enumclaw Courier-Herald

I am a Democrat. I am proud of the President of these United States. I was disgusted and frightened of our former President, but I did not slam him when he was in office as I am respectful of the acting Commander and Chief of this great nation. When I saw Mr. Brush strolling down one of New Orleans decimated streets after Katrina left her devastation and he was resting both arms upon the shoulders of two lovely young black women from New Orleans on either side of him for his photo op, I was convinced we had a moron in office. His arms were around those girls shoulders with his hands dangling in front of them. It was as though THEY were holding his weight as they strolled down the center of the street. He was not embracing them. He was leaning his weight on THEM. This image still conjures up disbelief in me. These young women had just lost everything they owned including loved ones, and HE was leaning HIS weight upon them. There appears to be corruption in any political group, but because of the size and complexity of our government I would never consider myself politically wise as the people who comment here. I'm amazed at all the "arm chair" political rants that go on here. What is most disturbing to me is the fact that one of our own police officers continually blasts the Democratic party so viciously that I would be afraid to be pulled over by him if my tail light should be out. He does not appear to be a stable individual in his posts. I would not feel safe as a Democrat in his presence. Prejudice comes in all colors and his hate of Democrats and their party is right down scary. I am also wondering when the hate mongers in this forum will understand the devastation left by Mr. Bush's decisions? My God, what a mess. I admire my current President and support him. You can slam me all you want. I won't read any of your comments anymore. I don't see good or healthy debating exchange. I see a few who are dead set in holding the Courier Herald captive so that they can air their "expert" observations and opinions. From the feedback I get from my neighbors, friends, coworkers and merchants, they all think you are boring and won't waste their time reading what posts you submit. I must agree. Why not exchange email addresses or phone numbers so that you can rant to one another and spare the reading public of your narcissus and political genius? You might think this is a fun exchange. Trust me. It's to the point of being boring and ridicules. If you were actually doing some good with your exchanges it might be a wholesome effort. Unfortunately when we see another politically laden title over a post, most are passing them up with disgust. But then again... this IS a free country and free speech is honored in this paper. Enjoy some sunshine and stop being so full of yourselves. My friends consist of both Republicans and Democrats. They are great people. They are good and descent citizens. I respect their right to choose their party. At this time we all what healing and the best way we can do this is if we spend time walking the walk, not talking the talk.

Re: City administrator grilled over comments regarding departure of parks director - Enumclaw Courier-Herald

If the Courier Herald ever misquotes an interview, they always... and I mean always correct the mistake in the following issue if they are notified. However, if they feel they represented the interview correctly, they will stand by their word. Bravo to the Courier Herald for not backing down. I think there may be a couple rotten apples in the administrative department of the City of Enumclaw. Reynolds ran a completely dirty campaign and continues to whitewash circumstances within the city business without taking responsibility. Why should it change now that she's in office? What bothers me most is that the voters swallowed the false information that was spread by her campaign. It's too late now. She's in...but be prepared for more unrest and backpedaling under her administration. However, the spirit was there and it was fantastic! There is so much to see and do during the Christmas season, I loved having the option of going to the parade and then going to one of the many Christmas programs that evening.
