And agreed I think to really go mass foursquare needs to go beyond the purely social use case.  When I explain foursquare to non-tech/media friends they seem to "get it" more when I describe it as also a way to qualify for specials, promotions and discounts from your favorite places to go.  I'm sure they are working on this, but FS needs to entice venues to offer more promotions (beyond mayorships), like qualifying for a free/discounted drink on your 3rd checkin or something. This may change developers' approach to building on platforms and ultimately may make it harder for new startups to grow like Twitter did. I really hope Yelp does take the steps you describe here.  I think Yelp is great and use it often, but it still doesn't close the loop for me. I search for establishments, read some of the info and reviews but then I still want to ask someone I know about the place to make the final decision.  Another review site that I think does a much better job of incorporating your social graph is &lt;a href="http://goodrec.com" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank" title="goodrec.com"&gt;goodrec.com&lt;/a&gt;, have you seen/used this site? Their problem (unlike Yelp) is breadth of coverage and distribution. My hope is that now that Amazon is not going to pay for these types of links, the publishers that send "organic" leads their way will see some kind of gain (maybe larger payouts for certain sales volume) because they are no longer 'diluted' by paid links. Games and entertainment are great, but one thing I find disappointing about the Faceboook ecosystem is the lack of good apps that focus on practical utility.  Maybe Facebook has the wrong audience for this (although I would argue the contrary), but if Apple wants to increase market share it should focus adequately on the utility apps (both personal and business-oriented).  The iPhone has the potential to be the 360-degree mobile solution for the consumer in personal and work life.
