The not-outraged part of my brain, though, would be ok with tiers if there was a reasonable unlimited plan. Since, while, me and many tech savvy folk I know dl all our stuff digitally, there's still huge portions of the general populace who use their access for surfing and email - and maybe it's ok if they pay less than me. I'm nervous at all these moves, but keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: How do I import comments?

I'd just like to throw my wish in for importing from wordpress. :)

Re: It’s about respect

I agree with this - I think under circumstances where some content is objectionable and really should not get any link juice should tactics like this be employed. In general, even disagreements should still point to the original especially when the anchor text suggests that that's what you're pointing to. For all the reasons cited above, accuracy, courtesy and respect. It's simply the way the internet works. That you may not back up your comments is completely within your control, Disqus is completely outside of your control. If they decide to shut down tomorrow, there's not much that could be done to salvage your comments unless they provide a way.

Having said that, I just rolled it out on my blogs, so I guess we'll see! :)

Re: Why People Are Passionate About Perl

Nice. Well just because I like one language more
than the next doesn't mean the products all have to be better! I
think, I actually tried installing MT first, but had troubles. I think it's a great model - if they added on some additional features available to paying folk as opposed to hobbling it for non-paying. I would probably be ok with an add flowing into my stream every now and again if it behaved like a regular tweet and rolled down the timeline.

Re: Google AppEngine & Amazon AWS

That's a pretty interesting idea, I hope someone's working on it already. Another thing that would be most awesome is coming at the same idea from a different angle - if Amazon could just let EC2 instances grow arbitrarily gigantic, so you get one instance and it simply can use more and more compute cycles as necessary - or if it's a logistical effort, instead of adding more instances you add more "cpus" to a given instance. I suspect that would be workable for many but the top 1% of super cpu suckers like twitter - you'd end up with a massive instance but not mind bogglingly so.

Re: Get Facebook’s Wall-To-Wall Functionality On Twitter

It would be great if some of the desktop apps like Twhirl would support this ad hoc wall to wall feature! That is it would run those two queries for you sort the results and display them right in the app. Now, that'd be a *great* feature.

Re: Three Reasons To Use Disqus

1) It's a tradeoff you take - I haven't seen much turning off of javascript on my site - nor would I expect it as more and more sites are web2.0ified, surfing without javascript becomes kind of web breaking.

2) comment ownership is a specific thing to say, since you can export those comments at will I'd say you are co-owners of the comments.

The real issue is the fact that you will lose all the comment text that crawlers will normally see and index. This could potentially have real long term SEO impact.

On the flip side, what you gain is the ability to reply to comments and replies via email. This is a significant benefit since it makes it very easy for people to continue a conversation. This helps increase the engagement with your site and can increase traffic. I'm not really clear how it's taking traffic, especially a *lot* of traffic away.

It's also nice to be able to see all your comments across discus enabled sites in one place (as well as to see it feed into things like FriendFeed).

All in all, it's not an unambiguous win, but the tradeoffs are good enough that a lot of people go for it.

Re: 3G iPhone imminent?? GR is my go through top to bottom all the time. It's designed for it. FF I read to see what's currently buzzing around the technoweb, definitely don't try and keep on top of it.

I love the notes feature of sharing on GR, too - my main frustration, now that I've played with FF especially, is that there's no way to subsequently comment on a piece that someone else has shared with a note. Or to get any feedback in general on things I've shared.

Sigh. But I totally see your point on FF noise. That's why I'm an FF dilletante. :)

Re: Friendfeed Like Compatibility Calculator

Heh!
