In hindsight - and now that I've been blogging for a while - this is BORING. I wrote a dental billing and practice management system for Bellflower Dental Group (a very large practice - over 30,000 patients at the time) in DataFlex 2.x and put it into production in 1986. Dave Jilk did a year 2000 update in 1999 (yes - there were tons of Y2K issues) and - as far as I know - it's still running. I also know of a few Clarion-based systems we wrote in the early 1990's that are still in production today. Some old code just never dies.

Re: What To Do In Hotchkiss Colorado

My mother's comments follow. I have some suggestions for you.

1. Connect with your Jewish heritage and celebrate with your Jewish family and friends.

2. Think of Christmas as a religious holiday, you know, the birth of Christ. This may help you ignore the consumer laden overtones of the day and be cheerful around those who enjoy it all.

3. Get over it. You're almost middle aged.

The above is predicated on the assumption that you were serious.

Re: RSS:Blog = HTTP:Web = SMTP:Email

Technorati is a "search engine." The last time I checked, there were a number of very successful companies that have build real businesses around search engines (e.g. Google, Yahoo). The primary business model is - surprise - revenue from advertising. Interestingly, in the blog world, there are a number of secondary business models based on the nature of the data being indexed - but all are "pay for content" related.

Re: PeopleSoft Testing and Oracle Migration

I'm not worried about this dynamic because I think it's inaccurate. There are a number of very successful ISV's who have built meaningful businesses around Oracle's platform. While Oracle will want the services revenue from upgrades, this impacts consulting firms much more then it impacts ISVs. In addition, PeopleSoft already had a huge internal consulting practice, so any third party vendors that were consulting or integration oriented were already suffering from the classic channel conflict that existed between PeopleSoft and their third party consultants.

The bigger concern is whether Oracle will ultimately developing comparable products to Newmerix - making Newmerix position in the market obsolete. PeopleSoft already had "testing products", but they are so inferior to Newmerix's as to not be competitive. While a major platform ISV such as Oracle can always choose to build products that cause their ISVs' products to be obsolete, the opportunity (and challenge) for the ISV is to continue to maintain relevance by innovating in areas that are using to the ISV. This is what Newmerix has been doing and - IMHO - has a very defensible technological (and architectural) base on which to build on.

Re: It’s Siebel, not Seibel

Oooh - that was mean.
