Joe McCarthy actually was right, and this has actually been in motion for longer than that. At least back to Wilson. In our time, our own defenders of We The People, broke their oaths, and allowed traitors to mock our Constitution, and to take over via a soft coup; (Or not so soft, if you attempted to protest it, you got killed or gulag'ed.) Sadly, because Trump failed to clean house on day one of his first term, either he didn't see it, or didn't care enough about it, and either way, I, like you, am not sure he is bright enough to right the ship, even given a second chance.
